'i\' 4 ■.. 1 * ’ * . -; The Savannah Dally Herald SAVANNAH, MONDAY FEBRUARY 10, 1866. An Extensfte BHuiuTncinry-the Hcuault L of Enterprlae and Energy. Those of our citizens who will let their minds re vert back to the year 1,8^7, will remember the estab- mont of a piano .forte manufactory in our *oity, of which the late William Knabe was the. founder. Al most from the start/' the Instruments manufactured by the firm achieved a marked success for their supe riority both in quality and finish over those which had been previously made here, and such was the en couragement received from the musical public, that itledatonce to the enlargement of the business, which had been begun on an humble scale, to one of more imposing importance. From the time when it wasaseertained that the efforts of the latepublic-spirited founder met with such deserved success in endeavor ing to secure for onr city the proud boast of its being the birth-place of the best pianos manufactured in this country, until the present period, the course of the ]iouse has been onward and upward, until now it has assumed gigantic proportions, and ranks as one of the most extensive if not the most extensive of its kind m this country or in Europe. We have been led to make these retrospective re marks by a visit which.we made a few days ago to the extensive factory of the firm on Eutaw and West streets, which now presents the most enlarged propor tions, the old building having been found entirely in sufficient to meet the wants of the trade, and an addi tion thereto being rendered absolutely necessary. The new building has just been completed/ and, united with the main building and the lumber yards, occu pies two entire squares of ground. This extensive manufactory is five stories high, and has an aggregate front-of 436 feet, with an average depth of forty feet. It is well lighted on all sides by numerous windows, and the interior is so arranged as to afford the greatest possible facilities to the workmen in the prosecution of their labors. It has been built in the most substan tial manner, with due regard in every respect to the requirements of the business. The various shops are each .appropriated to some distinctive branch of con struction, and it is instructive, in passing through the building, to note the busy scene of industry which meets the eye on all sides, and to mark the system which regulates the whole. Here may be seen all the different processes of manufacture, from the time the well-seasoned wood is taken the rough and goes through all the grada tions of blocking, case-making, sounding-bpard, top-making, finishing, regulating, timing, modulating, varnishing, until it receives the finish ing touch, and is ready for the delicate fingering of our fair countrywomen, or the more pronounced manipulation of the professional. All the modern mechanical aids to labor are contained in this factory; the beautiful and powerful engine turns a hundred wheels or moves a score of saws; and a number of rare and costly machines, of extraordinary power and unique invention, are in constant operation to pro duce the beautiful specimens of workmanship which the Knabe piano exhibits. The firm now employ about 250 workmen, and with their improved faculties for manufacturing, they turn out from thirty to forty instruments per week, including the finest and most elaborately finished grand and square pianos, which is not, however, entirely sufficient to meet the demand for these superior instruments. The whole establish ment ia heated by steam, the apparatus for which is of the most approved pattern, and was put up by Messrs. Thos. C. Basschor k Co. It is a pride and a pleasure’to us to record this evidence of the great public spirit which always actuated the late founder of the firm, and to ex press our gratification that his mantle has fallen upon such worthy shoulders as his two sons, Ernst and William, and his son-in-law, Charles Keidel, each of whom seems to be actuated by that remarka ble spirit and enterprise which never fails to be re warded with the most abundant success. Nor is it less a subject for congratulation and pride when we reflect that the fame of their instruments is not con fined to ona section alone, but extends all over the country, on the shores of the Atlantic as well as the Pacific slope, to South America and the West Indies, and even to Europe itself. This last fact is the more remarkable, when we remember the comparatively few years that have elapsed since it was considered impossible to have a good piano nnl^ it was im ported. But the Knabe piano, almost from its first inception, began to assert its superiority over the im ported instrument, until now it would be considered a very absurd thing to import a piano into this country, when wc have at our own doors and in our midst those which are so far beyond them in durability, eauty of tone, and elegance of finish. The pianos manufactured by Knabe & Co. are made in the-most thorough manner of well-seasoned timber, which gives them such powers of endurenee as may be relied upon. They are not turned out with rapid- ity with a view only to their sale, but they are so constructed that they will boar their own attestation Qf their sterling qualities. There are three classes into which they are manufac tured—«tlie grand, the • square, r and the upright. There are but few makers qf the first named in the United States, and the Knabe is without a su perior. The tone is large and sonorous, brilliant and sympathetic, round and bell-like; and its power of singing or sustaining the sound is not exceeded in any instrument now made. The touch is firm, elastic, and powerful, meeting every requirement of the player.— The “square” is equally marked in its general excel lence, its tone being of a refined and beautiful charac ter, sympathetic and brilliant, clear and equal in all its registers, while in point of touch it is all that could be desired, and in finish and exterior appearance the workmanship is perfect. The “upright” is sweet and silvery in tone, and possesses more power than could be expected from an instrument of this class, and is in every respect an admirable instrument —the small, compact firm and elegant case rendering it a desira ble ornament for the chamber or boudoir, We might go on indefinitely to multiply the many' advantages of these instruments; but we have said enough for our purpose, which was the more especially t«k. call public attention to the new building and the extensive business in which Messrs. Knabe & Co. are now engaged, and to which they have risen by that indomitable energy and perseverance which must always secure success, and that liberality of spirit which has ever actuated them in all their daily transactions. It is with a double pleasure, there fore, that we refer to these improvements and advan tages—not only as Baltimoreans having at heart the welfare and prosperity of our city, but as conferring honor upon a worthy uind public spirited firm, who have contributed so gilatly to the development of the mechanical and artisticj skill of our people, and placed us among tho foremost in the land in the manufacture of that “king of the instruments” which contributes so much to the enjoyment of all classes, and without which no house is perfect.—Baltimore Sunday Morn ing Telegram, Jan. 28.
