SAVANNAH, GEORGIA, FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 25, ' i .A m ■ i— 1806. The Siiyaiuinli Daily Herald [From the St. Louis Evening News.] MY OARUNG. Oh, yearning heart! Oh, list’ning ear! Why covet wliat we may not hear ? Oh, fatal day! Oh, cruel death! Why did you steal my darim’s breath ? Was there no weary aching breast, Pining to die and be at rest, Where thou could’at liaply send thy dart, For, break a doting mother’s heart. Was there no home beneath the sun, Where dwelt some lonelv uuloved one, But thou must grudge my baby’s charms, And snatch him from my circling arms V Did I not chide the very air That dallied with liis golden hair, Lest it sh mid prove too rude or chill, And make my cherished idol ill. Say! Was the day ’ere sad to me, When he lay smiling oil my knee— Had not the night a sacred charm, When he lay pillowed on my arm ? Why did’st tliou steal him then from mel Hush nil his baby notes of price, guench the dear light o* his sweet eyes, Aiul rob me of my paradise ? Oh, tyrant! - {there no appeal? Can I not »^~h thy heart of steel; Take h' nic, and wealth, and friendship mild, Bufc<5' lVU back, oh Death, my child? ” He lives! ” But not through thee, oli Death! Docs my sweet babe regain his breath; Divine compassion sets him free! Jesus will give him back to me. Legal Notices. Legal Notices.^ Legal Notices. .Diplomatic Trouble3 over Bancroft’s Oration. The extraordinary attacks upon European powers, made by Mr. Bancroft in his funeral oration upon President Lincoln, have excited much indignation among the foreign diplomatists in Washington. In two dillerent passages of his discourse, Mr. Bancroft called the Emperor Maximilian, brother of the Em peror of Austria, “the Austrian adventurer.” The New York Herald’s correspondent says that “on the evening of the 12th the Austrian Minister sought an interview with the Secretary of State on this subject, uud expressed to him, without reserve, the painful impression produced upon him by this injurious epithet, adding that he felt the insult the more as it had taken place in the midst of a solemnity to which he had been expressly invited by tlio presidents of both houses, as well as by Mr. Seward himself. It seems that the Secretary of State, instead of seeking to extenuate Mr. Bancroft’s expression, at once contested the Austrian Minister’s right to complain of it, and that because tin; cabinet of Vienna h? d several times declared its intention of remaining aloof from the Mexican allairs. The Austrian Minister is said to have declined to accept a theory by which the person of the Prince, us a member of the imperial family of Austria, would not have been separated from his political posi tion, amt declared that he persisted in protesting against Mr. Bancroft’s insulting expression. We are not yet aware whether the British Minister lias officially protested against the attacks directed to the p >iiey of liis government. It is, however, Certain that hj complains greatly of them, and that lie retracted liis acceptation of a dinner invihif^on at*the house of a member of ingress as soon zfTTie heard that this diuiier was given in honor of Mr. Bancroft. Good Advice.—Henry A. Wise, a most inveterate talker as lie is, sometimes says a good thing. In a re cent speech to the “Richmond Blues, he gave this sensible advice: “He, their General, hail surrendered, and it was a bona tide surrender. If liis hearers, those who fought in the ranks of the Blues, would allow their General to issue his last orders, he would say surrender, and let it be a bonti tide surrender; not a crouching, servile surrender, but a surrender upon the point of honor. If oaths a: j required of you in order Unit you may re turn to your occupations, take them, if you possibly can, and to work. Lay aside your oid gray regi mentals: they have served you well, and you never disgraced them. But go to work. If you can’t get a d )lhu* u day, hike the halt cf it;, if you can’t get a quai- t r, take a cent; if you can't get meat and bread, get bread alone; and uyou can’t get a whole loaf, take a half.
