Police Matter*.
Thursday night being a kind of feetire one. many
people Indulged la drinking to the memory of the
“Fatter of Hla Country." and aome of them over-
patriotic happened to get a trifle too much. In con-
sequence the docket in the Mayor-, office yesterday
contained an unuaual number of caaea of drunken-
neaa.
The flratcaae called up waa that of a captain forvio-
latmg city ordinance in discharging coal from hla ihip
without the necessary tarpaulin. The evidence, how
ever. waa not found sufficient to fine him, and Mayor
Anderson dismitaed the cm with an Injunction to be
more careful in the fnture. *
Another captain of a steamboat waa charged with
the same offence. Upon being called he did not re
spond, and the Mayor being informed that the cap
tain had been summoned, the case proceeded. The
policeman testified to the fact of the steamboat lying
outside of two other boats, and that the coal was being
wheeled to his boat across the others; that the one
next the wharf had the necessary tarpaulin, but nei
ther of the others were provided in the same inanner,
and the coal waa occasionally dropped into the river
from the barrows. The evidence being concluded
and the captain not making hia appearance, ha waa
fined ten dollars.

The Committee on Finance to whom waa referred
the application of John Stoddard Esq., Chairman
Commissioner of Pilotage, asking Council to pay over
to said board any surplus that may remain from the
Harbor Maater's fees, after payment of hia salary for
the purpose of Improving the navigation of the river,
respectfully beg leave to report in flivor of the same’,
and suggest that the City Treasurer be instructed to
pay to Mr. Stoddard, Chairman as aforesaid, any such
surplus as soon as received and until otherwise di
rected.

The benefit and last appearan. e of Mr. Loud this
evening is to be signalized by the appearanoe of the
talented young tragedian, Walter Benn, and the first
production of a play of thrilling interest, “1516 Iron
Mask.’’ The worthiness of the beneficiary of the oc-
caasion and the double attractions of the bill canuot
fail to draw out a large house. Respecting the play of
the evening, the great historical drama of Victor Hugo,
a few words of explanation will doubtless be of inter'
eat to our renters. It had long been a fertile theme of
speculation among students of history who the mys
