German Immigration t« (he Bouth Last evening, according to an invitstiou of Mayor Anderson, quite a respectable number iff prominent business men assembled at the Exchange to bear the views and plana of Mr. John H. CM in regard to fur nishing the South with German laborers. His Honor the Mayor, in a few words introduced the speaker to the assemblage. He stated that Mr. Orf came to him with letters from His Excellency Governor Jenkins, who stated that from what he had seen of the gentle- man he waa aatiafled he had something tangible to offer. The speaker, who appeared to have a good under- standing of hie theme, though laboring under the dis advantage of not being able to express >••*•• <*-»!' readi ly In the English language, went on to say that he had found the soil of this State particularly adapted to the vulture of the grape and cereals. He said he be longed to an organization in the West which had rami fications in New York and other cities as well aa in Europe, which had for its object the introduction and protection of German labor In this country. He said he bad petitioned the Governors of South Carolina I and Tennessee, aa well as of Alabama and Georgia, all of whom had given him some encouragement. He then went on to explain how he was to get these immigrants out here, and how he was to prepare them for thetr hew duties; but his plan was noi exactly understandable. One thing, however, was understood, and that was that he proposed to issue a pamphlet setting forth the advan tages of the southern country, the salubrity of the climate, and the adaptability of its soil for the railing of eheep, wines and hops, as well ae cotton. For the purpose of printing some two hundred thousand I copies of this pamphlet, which wss to be distributed I in Germany, and for the payment of tha salaries of the I neoeaeary agents and sub-sgeuts, as well as his own I expenses to Europe, which he pui down at the moder ate figure of eighteen hundred dollars, he stated it was necessary to raise about twenty thousand dollars, of [ which Georgia should raise about six ihoueand dollars, I Miniature Almanac -This Day. Yesterday morning before Judge Pollard, there was an unusual amount of business. The court room was densely packed with negrpes and negresses. Very fortunately it was not a warm day. The crowd was doubtless attracted by the examination of negroes charged with attempting to shoot officers. The judge threatened to bring the spectators up singly and re quire of them their papers showing their means of living. This had the effect of partly clearing the room. ■ The case of Huberts and Daniels, charged with ! stealing a bale of cotton from in front of the store of M. S. Cohen, waa continued until yesterday morning, j That of the three negroes, James Howard, Brooker McNeal and Fred. Law, supposed to be connected with the robbery of Ives’ store, was postponed until to morrow morning.
