The arresting offi cer testified that be discovered him about three o'clock yesterday morning, with the bag in hie p— ; — under the bluff and proceeding up the bill. The man could give him no satisfactory answer ee to the owner ship ofthe cotton, and he was arrested and taken to the Barracks. The bag oootained about fifty or sixty pounds of cotton. Upon being questioned as to where he got it. the man stated that he came here from Petersburg Landing, up the river, end ley down to rest somewhere in the western end of the town, and towards morning feeling cold he thought he would make a trip down as far s's the gas works and get warm; that on the way he met q negro with the cot ton, who, on seeing him, started and ran, leaving the bag, which he secured and was taking with him. Mayor Anderson committed the man to jail for the purpose of further examination, and ordered Lieut. Howard to make inquiry as to the antecedents of the prisoner, and find out whether any person in Savan nah knew him. In the case of two men charged with being drunk, the matter was examined, and the parties pleading guilty were fined respectively ten and Hr# dollars. Another Robbery. On Tuesday night the yard adjacent to the residence of Mr. Chaa. O'Sullivan, on State street, was entered and robbed of the entire washing of Ih: leasehold. The washer-woman had left the clothes, some in the tubs, and others on the hnes. thinking they were perfectly safe, but some person in want of juet such articles thought it a good opportunity to furnish him self cheaply. The goods consisted of sheeting gt "I shirtings, and other articles generally found in a Monday morning's wash, and were valued at about one hundred and fifty dollars, which Is considerable of s loss to the owner. This should verve as another warning to honsewifes not to allow anything of value to "be left uncared-for after dark. Probable Loss of Three Me 11 . We yesterday learned from Mr. Simpson from Ver- nonburg that John Nosti^ud and his step-son, whose name he did not know, with a negro man left that place on Tuesday of last week for the purpose of oya- terlng and fishing, since which lime they have not been heard from. On Tuesday last two boats were found in Bradley Creek, on the east end of Ossabew Sound, answering to the description of the boats in their possession. One was a sail-boat and was sunk with the mast above water, and when it waa pulled out they found some clothes which came up with it. The Sound is rough at best of times, but at that particular time It was exceedingly' so, and the supposition is that they may have tried to cross it, and having a load of oysters onboard took in water freely and soon sank. Freedmen’s Court. There were but few cases tried before Judge Pollard yesterday morning. Several mule-stealing cases ar e on the docket, and one or two were brought up for trial, but were postponed until thiB morning. A couple of white men were on trial charged with beating a colored man in the vicinity of the Central Railroad depot. The ehsrge was laid originally against a man named Craney, and another named Williams, but the testimony went to show that Wll- hams had nothing to do with the matter, but that another named Walsh had, and he was accordingly ar raigned. The evidence was positive against the ac cused, and the Judge, after considering it, discharged Williams, bnt imposed a fine of twenty-five dollars on Craney and five dollars on Walsh. There was another case of some negro women on trial, but the evidence was of such a character that it is unfit for publication. Sudden Death. Last evening Mr. Julios Cercopuly, a printer by pro fession, was taken suddenly ill in the street, and ex pired in a short time after being removed to hia fa ther’s residence. Mr. Cercopuly had not done much at his business for many years, being at one time in command of the dredging boat Ids, which was em ployed in clesring the river of obstructions, and after wards in the Confederate navy. He had been sick for some time, bnt during the last few days of his life had set type in the Republican office, and, working rather latest night, together with his recent sickness, is sup. posed to have occasioned liis sudden demise. He left the office at Bix o’clock, and, on his way home, was at tacked with an apoplectic fit and fell in the street. He was conveyed home in a wagon and Dr. Reed sum moned, but his efforts were of no avail. • ‘In the midst of life wears in death." iiihi H i-k Failure—Yesterday afternoon quite ax m iitirse of people was gathered near the •’* - in-1 a the performance of a person who had '■ -Miouu.-cd to walk a tight rope at two o’clock in v- a."on Alter keeping the crowd waiting until -Hi mt o’clock, the acrobat attempted his task.— r W " suspended between two pine trees at an oi ui -1 seine fifteen or twenty feet from the cad by the aid of a ladder, pole in hand, the ! aocr reached his starting point, but from some ‘ "tli rr he was not able to stand erect or get ’■ 1 Atii*r a i,-w efforts, he found that something ■ tl* in eter with the p ile.
