Capt. J. H. Watrous, Judge Advocate of the |tsr>
commission, at present sitting in this city, ykday
visited the State prisoner James Duncan, no'
in the Chatham county jail awaiting his
the commission upon charges arising (Tom
treatment of Voltg prisoners while on

Dnncan waa brought down from hit cell I the'
office of the keeper of the jail. He came f the
room with a qutok, elastic step and, saluting ^offi

manner, took a chair and talked frankly

apparently not yet thirty, with a vigorous and
frame which his six months’ does coofinoni ap
pears to have made but little impression upo He
has a flue open face with a high forehead, darjyes
and hair, and crisp chin-whiskers and moustacl
The visit of Capt. Watrous was for the purfl of
notifying Duncan that it would bs neceaaary fchim
to maka hid arrangements for his defence, as Was
desired to commence tha trial at an early day. fun-
can said that he had procured uo counsel, buup-
posed that the Catholic clergyman who visitejiim

had a number of witnesses to introduce in his
but was apprehensive that he would not be
certain the whereabouts of some of the im
of them. CapL Watrous informed him he
summoned before the Military Commtslon this
ing, when hs would be called on to make
to what he expected to prove by his witnesses,
which the Government wonld send for such of
as were necessary.
In the course of the conversation Duncan
he enlisted at the breaking out of the war in the
\ irginia Regiment, and never rose above the
private. While in Virginia be waa dotslled
charge of some of the Government bakeries inich-
mond, whence he was ordered to Andertonvi) by
General Winder to fill a similar position thA

Washington as witnoss. He never waa put 01

remained three months, and was then brought
vanrah. He left home expecting to be absent ai
a week, but has now been incarcerated nearly
months waiting for his trial. While passing
Annapolis on his way to Washington he fell in
number of Federal soldiers who had been
under him at Andersonville. He says they sppewd
to he glad to see him, shook hands with him andjn
various other ways evinced the most kindly feelfo
towards him.
Wc understand the charges against Duncan are oto
very serious nature, to substantiate which a lam
number of witnesses have been summoned, some f
whom have already arrived in Savanuah.
