[ft roll* on I —Kxchangt^ rFrorn the Augusta Chronicle of Wednesday.) DEATH OF OEN. JOHN It* JACKSON. In quick succession during the last few weeks, sev eral of our most intelligent and influential utizcns have missed away. Sot many days have elapsed Binco we were called upon to mourn the death of those most distinguished in civil life, and now it becomes our du ty- to chronicle the demise of one who was kuown to mir citizens from earliest infancy, and who, as he pro- greyed u years, either as a school boy, an aspirant fortoo honors of the bar ; a successful ^Tor and gallant officer—never failed to command the respect of shat Igors and the admiration of friends. A melancholy hovers over our city: the voice of mourning is heard in the family circle, and sadness pervades the counting-room. Death waves his black flag in triumph over all that Is mortal m Gen. John h. J 'Gcii ,1 Jaekson was born and reared in this city. At an early age. lie discovered most promising powers of intellect. These he developed and improved by ha* study, and was soon a candidate for adnnssion to practice in the courts of this district. Ill this partic ular vocation, the General was better known as being thoroughly conversant with all tlie vinmtKZ of the profession, than ou account of oratorical powers. As a lawyer, he was eminently fortunate. For a number of years connected with the Augusta Volunteer Battalion, Gen. Jackson had won quite a reputation as a soldier and officer; and on the break- in,* out of the war, was elected to the Colonelcy of the First Georgia regiment. He remained in command of the regiment for a few montha. when he received a . Brigadier’s commission. His brigade was attached to the western army, and distinguished itself on every occasion, when called into battle. The member* of “ Jackson’s Brigade, will hear with sad hearts, of the death of their brave commander. He died at MiUedgeviUe, of typhoid pueiimonia, Tuesday morning. His remains will be brought to this city for interment, a* soon an possible. . Gen. Jackson waa a gentleman of great social worm, and a public spirited citizen whose chief pride was me ■ dorr -wastes ..country. His place in our midst can ne-rer be Supplied. He was about thirty-seven years Capt. Semmes—It will be a relief to the is brave and meritorious officer to learn, - as is suueu m the Army and Navy Journal, that the purpose of the government in making mis arrest to to try a cause, not a man. That me main object is to ad duce sworn evidence concerning me Alabama, to be used in the diplomatic correspondence witn the Eng- lish government in relation to the Alabama claims. The.same journal says: "It was generally and prop erly considered that, amnesty or no amnesty, the taith of the nation had been pledged not to trouble the Con- federate officers and soldiers on the ground of having waged war against me United States. And, in effect, • woliave never "disturbed’ a single man, however guil ty on that ground. A few officials desired to draw a fine distinction between the Ksurgente as insurgents and citizens with a view to setting aside all that mere was valuable to the enemy in our generous agreement But Gen. Grant and our officers promptly rebuked such sentiments, regarding their honor as pledged to me maintenance of the terms in their full magnan imity ; and the people'Tt (.ponded to the army.’ A Peace Convention—A call for a Peace Conven tion to be held at Tremout Temple, Boston, on me urn of March, has been issued by a committee ap pointed at the informal Peace Conference held In Bos ton in December. The committee consists of Adin Ballou of Hopedale, Mass.; Ezra H. Heyw-ood ol Princeton, Mass.; Joshua P. Blanchard of Boston, Mass • Lysander S. Richards of Boston, and Alfred H. Love of Philadelphia. The objects of me convention are thus defined: To consider what ought to be done in behalf of the peace cause; and, if practicable, to organize a new, uncompromising, vigorous and well ordered movement against me war system, on tlie basis of total abstinence from all resorts to deadly force among mankind, between individuals, families, communities, states and nations. Important propo sitions will be laid belore the convention. The Rebel Gen. Joe. Johnston.—At Fredericks burg I met and was introduced toOeu. Joseph E. Johnston. Two dava In his company, I must confess he impressed me most favorably as a perfect gentle man. Modest and quiet in his demeanor, he was courteous and kind. He and Captain Lee brother of the general—and two Federal officers took me over the famous battle-ground of Fredericksburg, and pointed out to me the move* and mistakes made by both ar mies in that bloody seyon days' fight. The courtesy these officers—who lately hart met and fought each other in me battles—showed to each other astonished me. I could not forbear remarking to them that they reminded me of ourBamum’a “happyfamily.” Gen. Johnston replied, with a sad mnile : “The war was dreadful." and now that it is over he felt, for one, ••that kindness and the arts of peace *11 should study." Speaking of the courtesies shown him by federal offl- ccrshc said : “Had he favor to ask he would soonest ask it of those who had been most deadly and directly opposed to him in battle.” “The brave can trust me brave,” thought I.—Cor. Brooklyn Union, (Rep.) The Great Question.—Mr. Stevens of Georgia treats briefly of the negro question in his speech De- fore. me Legislature. He is quite phUosophical _ upon It. accepting, as is proper, the actual conditional things, and urging the people and their represented rives to make the best of it. He urges thoStato-f Georgia to give the new system * "fiur andjusttri d without iwejudiceand -with the eamestness of pwrpoa* which always looks hopefully tosucccas Heasks that wise and humane provision be made for the ue LroCTand mat ample and full protection be secured wtbe'm aml Xenwe consider the extraordinary powerExercised by Mr. Stephen* in Georgia, and the extraordinary attention with which his 1 '*[A wavs received, we shall have (pounds for the hope that liia words on this subject will prove elective. It is unquestionably true that, after all, the Hoxithcrii peo- ple and the southern States themselves must take the Liam part in the solution of the difficulties connected with the future of the black race; and if they bring to it the same spirit as is displayed by Mr. shall confidently look for the best results.—-Veifl I o) a Times. ■ The Catholic Church re Ireland.—The Roman Catholic Archbishop of Chasel has just addressed a letter to one of me Roman Catholic members of Parli ament lu which, referring to the suggested endowment of liis church, he affirms his determination to support the voluntary system and that alone. He would, he says, oppose any measure mat would make tlie Roman Catholic bishops and priests in Ireland stipendiaries i).- state in any degree whatever. Dr. Leary states bis belief that by this declaration he expresses the sentiments ol the bishopB and priests of his church in Ireland. Keoro Emouatiow West.—The Atlanta Intelligen cer of me !»th inst says: "The flight of “blackbirds” westward continues on tho increase. Every train bears lienee flocks of every size and sex. Upon inquiry, we are told that enter- prizing persons are collecting mem for the planta tions of Mississippi and Louisiana; and we are very much of opinion that many of the poor creatures are seduced off under promise* that never will be lulfilled. But Africa don’t feel free until he breaks loose from his lonuer employer, and so let him break.” At a theatre in Indianapolis, while Matilda Herron was harrowing up the feelings of me audience with me fictitious griefs of “Msada,” a real tragedy was be- ing enacted in the parquette. A young beautiful and accomplished lady. In company with a male friend, was observed to take a vial from her pocket and has tily swallow its contents. Noticing something strange aud wild in her manner, me young man asked her wliat It was she had taken, when she replied It was only a little cough uiixure. lu a short time, however, ehe became deadly ill, and was taken home, where she confessed she had taken poison—a mixture of ox alic acid and opium. Tlie latest sensation in Chicago has been a great dog fight, the description of which occupies three solid columns of me Republican. The headings of me re port are sufficiently suggestive of me nature of me contest. Among mem are tbs following: “Best con tested battle on record,” “Twenty thousand dollars lost aud won,” “The Boston dog victorious,” “Neither animal survives me struggle,” “How roughs behaved at the tavern,” “Hum, ruffianism, riot and rubbery.” The whole affair was as complete an ex hibition of the nether strata of Chicago rowdyism aud brutality as could have possibly been got up. A case of freezing to death in Chicago, during the late cold spell, has come to light. On Friday last, a little girl named Annie Sullivan, residing in the West Division, was frozen to death on a public thorough fare while ou her way to school. Overpowered with me cold, me little sufferer sank down upon the sidewalk, and when found was beyond Mrirtauce. Insurance. WASHIK6T0K LIFE INSURANCE CO. NO. 98 BROADWAY, NEW YORK.
