In the New Englander for August, I860, Dr. Bacon
pronounces the following exquisite hymn "unsur
passed in the English or any other language,” and
adds that "perhaps It is as near perfection as any un
inspired language can be.” It is usually ascribed
to HiUhonse, the poet, i. e., James A. Hillhouae, but,
according to Dr. Bacon, it was written by his younger
brother, Augustus L. Hillhouse, who died near Paris
iu March, 1859:
Trembling before thine awful throne,
O, Lord! 'n dust my sins I *wn,
Justice and meroy for my life
Contend! Oh! smile and heal the strife.
The Savior smiles I upon my soul
New ties of hope tumultuous roll—
His voice proclaims my pardon found.
Seraphic transport wlnga the sound.
Earth lias Joy unknown’ in heaven—
The new-born peace of sin forgiven i
Tears of such pure and deep delight.
Ye angels 1 never dimmed your sight.
Ye saw of old, on chaos rise
The beauteous pillars of the skies;
Ye know where mom exulting springs,
And evening folds her drooping wings.
Bright heralds of the Eternal Will,
Abroad his errands ye fulfill!
Or, throned iu floods of beamy days,
Syniphonioua in his presence play.
Love is the song—the heavenly plain
Is shaken with the coral atr&iu—
And dying echoes, floating far.
Draw music from each chiming star.
But I amid your choir shall shine.
Amt all your knowledge shall be miue;
ye on your harps must learn to hear
A secret chord that mine will bear.

THE TWO BRIDES.
BY B. H. BTODnABD.
1 saw two maids at tbe kirk.
And both were fair and sweet,
Ouo was in her bridal robe,
One in her windiug sheet.
Tile choristers sang the hymn,
The sacred rites were read—
And one for life to life,
And one to death was wed!
They went to their bridal beds
In loveliness and Noom;
One in a merry castle,
One in a solemn tomb.
One to the world of sleep,
4 Locked in the arms of love;
And one in the arms of death
Passed to the Heaven above.

Going to Mexico.
We hear of a number of gentlemen in this section,
and others in different portions of the State, who in
tend to go to Mexico in tbe Spring. From South Car
olina wo hear of many of the first and best citizens of
that State who have made all arrangements for start
ing out early in the Spring. While we regrot to sue so
rnauy of our good people turning their backs upon
their native soil, and disrupting all the ties that bind
them to home and friends, yet we cannot blame them.
Our poor, unfortunate country is so impoverished—
tlie present is so gloomy, and the future wrapt in dark
ness so impenetrable, it is not surprising that many
aro ready, nay anxious, to try their fortunes in a new
country, where, at least equality and protection may
be found under the adopted government. It is sail
indeed to leave the graves of fathers auil kindred and
friends, but cadder still to live in anxiety, disfrau-
ehisemant and poverty, and in dread of other ills
daily impending. Oh, that the spirit of charity and
brotherly love would pervade the minds and hearts of
our oonquejors, and that wo might he permitted to
work out our destiny in the laud of our birth, with all
our rights restored to us, and all our liberties secured!
If it were so, then would we stand by our country at
every hazard, and to the last extremity.—Milledgerille
Union.
A Delegation, of Young Ladies Visit the Pbesi
dent.—On Friday afternoon a delegation of young
ladies had an interview -with - the President, of which
the Sun says:
“Six of the young ladies were from Memphis, Tenn.,
some of them the daughter of personal friends of tlie
President; six froiQ Gwotgia, and the remainder from
Virginia and Maryland. Professor Brooks, on behalf
of the young ladies, addressing the President in a neat
' little speech., assuring him of their high admiration
tor his elevated statesmanship, and their grateful ap
preciation of bis kind and Conciliatory feelings to
wards that section of the country from which they
came, iu hia-effoHs lor the restoration of the Union.
The President received the young ladies most gra
ciously, taking them by the hand singly. He ex
pressed his gratification at meeting them, and spoke
of the benignant influence of women in calming the
strife of the hour. He considered their presence here
as a cheering evidence that it was not impossible to
cement firmly the bonds of the Union. The young
isdics then -withdrew, much charmed with the affa
bility of the President. They retimed in the evening
train to Baltimore.”
A Washington corresponpent of the New York Tri
bune presents the following picture of "General Lee
at Arlington.” How much like that other picture,
seen by the slave ’ of Sextillius nearly two thousand
years ago, of the exiled Marius, sitting on the ruins of
Chartliage): *
“A gentlemen of this city having occasion to paaB
through Arlington at dusk on Saturday, saw a lonely
figure standing with folded arms at the foot of a tree.
Struck with the sorrowful attitude of the person, he
walked past him and saw that it was Robert E. Lee,
standing in tbe street that paases through the middle
of his old estate. Mrs. Lee has applied to the Presi
dent for a restoration of thia estate, which has virtu
ally become a national union soldiers ’ cemetery. Thu
expectation is general that the President will order its
restoration.” '
The correspondent of the New York World fnruisbe,
the following report of a recent speech of the Presi
dent. We suppose it was addressed to some radical
friend of the expectant:
“There is a commission on my table now which was
filled out for Mr. , bat he will never see it. I
know me well what is going on out this way as you
do. I know you have what yon call a 'Chase faction,'
and 1 don't know what other factions. But I know
wliat I am trying to do for restoration; and if you or
any other man think I ant going to place men in prom
inent positions who will use their place to oppose my
policy, you are very much mistaken. You may tell
thia to whom you please. 1 desire to have it thorough
ly understood."
Genlhal Foubest.—We had the pleasure of meet
ing this distinguished gentleman yesterday, and was
glad to see him looking in fine health and spirits. The
General, iu reply to an allusion to the canard of his
having gone to Mexico, requested us to say, that he
baa not been, nor has he the remotest idea of going,
anywhere else than back to bis plantation, where he
and a goodly number of black men are bard at woak
trying to make enough to live on, pay taxes, and http
the Government to get out of debt. He advises every
body else to do the same thing. He ia as earnest
and sincere a supporter of the Government aa he was
a good lighter, and thinks the right way to get out of
our troubles ia for everybody to be at work, and in
the discharge of all the duties resting upon, him

A remarkable case of absence of mind occurred at
'the residence of one of our most hospitable citizens
last evening. A friend of well known bibilona pro
pensities, had no sooner entered the room then he
was asked to take a drink. "Thank you,” said the
guest, throwing his hat into the fire and quietly pla
cing a quid of tobacco on a table near by. This is the.
nioet remarkable case of absence of mind that we
have ever been called upon to record Atlanta intel
ligencer.
