ARE TO EXAMINE OUR COMPLETE STOCK OF & Bought Expressly/ftirj ithe SoiwHfern Jobbing Trade. ORFF * m & The Savannah Daily Herald SAVANNAH, TUESDAY MARCH 6. 1866. WHOTIEH'S HEW POEM. “Snow-Bound; A Winter Idyl.*' 'Whittier's new poem, entitled “Snow-Bound : a Winter Idyl,” is published by Ticknor & Fields. The poem shows that the poetical powers of Whittier have not begun to wane, nor has he lost any of that pecu liar ability in the portrayal of rural life which has endeared his “Maud Muller” to all lpverw of gen uine poetry. The work is an unpretending little vol ume. describing a New England household while tem- norarlv isolated by a protracted snow-storm. Its truthfulness to nature will be attested by all New Eng landers who read it The beginning of the storm, when the sun •■Knee cheerless over hills of gray, And darkly circled, gave at noon A sadder light than waning moon; the second day, when ••^’e looked upon a world unknown. On nothing we could call our own. * *. ******* No cloud above, no earth below, A universe of sky snd snow," anil all the peculiar future* of the New England snow- -torin are reproduced with wonderful fidelity, and in simple and beautiful language. . , . . While the members of the household are isolated from all outer communication, their resources by no means fail them: “What matter how the night behaved ? What matter how the north wind raved'! Blow high, blow low, not all its snow '■Could quench our hearth-fire’s ruddy glow." So tue lather has his hunting stories, and tells of marvellous adventures around the Isles of Shoals; the mother—"while she turned her wheel”—has tales of Indian raids on “Cocheco town,” and of her early days, so told that “Ti e almost felt the gusty air That swept her native wood-paths bare." Then the uncle— , “* * innocent of books”— But rich in love of fields and brooks"— tells of “feats on pond and river dam;" Alice, "dear aunt"—a maiden and not young— "Who, lovely, harmless, not the less Found peace in love's unselfishness"— called up "her girlhood memories”—and another—; “our yjuugest and our dearest," whose “large, sweet, asking eyes,” are “Now bathed within the iadeleax green “And hedy peace of Paradise,” sat a passive listener. Other characters, equally well portrayed, are intro duced and complete the domestic circle. The poem, as a whole, is—what it purports to be—a rca! idyl of New England life, simply, briefly and beautifully told, and the author's trust that * * * “in some lull of life, Some truce of God which breaks its strife," these pictures of “winter joys” will appeal to the hearts even of worldlings, is well founded.
