LA.RfJkST CIRC8LAT1M IN THE CITY ANN COUNTY DAY, MARCH 7, 1860. Interesting reading matter on the 4th Page. THE OPERA. The long absence ot scientific performers bad well-nigh estranged from art the most cultivated of those in our midst who had devoted themselves to musical culture. Sacred music in our churches had engaged the attention of those who possessed natural giits, whether vocal or instrumental. Parlor music, comprising chit fly simple a;rs, relieved by occasional military refrains, was also cul tivated to some extent, but with the oppor tunity for cultivation has lost the relish for the music of the opera. The very names which arc- associated with the strains that belong to that branch of the vocal art, had become aimost obsolete among u?. It was difficult to revive the associations connected with operatic music. The old had forgotten, the young many of them had never seen the opera and its fascinating ac companiments. There bad been a gradual divorce from its enjoyments by those who btlii had retained a keen sense of its p'easures. It wan conceived that it would require some years -f commercial prosperity to restore to n; this, with other enjoyments that are nourished and sustained by the income which commerce produces. When, there lore, it was announced that the Italian opera was to revisit U3, it was heard with some what of tuat incredulity with which joyful news is ever received. Bui when we saw those expressive Italian faces at our hotels— bronzed complexions, aquiline noses, flash ing eyes, and features in which passion so easily admits of embodiment—we began to believe that we were indeed to have su I';, i t" •; pera, if only for a few days. And when the reality was brought home to our coav'ction—when we saw iu that rarest of combinations passion portrayed, character delineated, incident evolved, and mil ic, vocal and instrumental, enlisted as an auxiliary to these dramatic c-flects—when the arts of the pnet, the painter, the musician, the costumer, when voice, gesture, action have united their attractions, we theu realized the fact that wo are enjoying the Italian opera! The first night passes and every one is in raptures. Gbioni fascinates by her voice, which the modulates with such exquisite art, ar.d makes obedient to all the inflections of passion. Patti Strakosch wins univer sal admiration by the delicacy and sweetness of her .- trains. Erraui by his united vocal and dramatic power—bis rich and flexible l every auditor, and Mancusi sion ia those passages which emotions in a sympathizing Hs thus that the open by de grees brings back those pleasures by the witchery of music, declamation and dress, the various arts that address themselves to the ear, the eye and the imagination, and that we may expect these pleasures to be come intensified with each repetition of the enj ;y;nents that are associated with this branch of imitative art. We have had Tro- vatore uud Martha. To-morrow night that popular opera, Norma, will be performed, which loses noue of its charm by repetition- On the lyric stage it stands in the snine re lation as the School for Scandal aud Richard the Third do iu the drama The public nev er becomes fatigued by its repetition. TilK SAVA.VSAU MARKETS. We have been shown a letter addressed to a house in this city by a merchant residing in Florida, in which the inquiry' is made whether the wholesale merchants of Savan nah have made preparations adequate to the demand of the country trade. This incident has suggested the propriety of our giving publicity to the fact, which, it appears, is not generally known, that our wholesale merchants have made ample prep arations for the spring trade—that, in addi tion to the large etocks already’ on hand, they arc receiving constantly additional supplies, embracing every quality and description of dty goods and groceries, both American and foreign. There is, indeed, no department of the trade that is not fuliy represented, and there can be no country dealer but wifi he able to purchase bis entire stock with satis- laciion to himself aDd to the tastes of bis cj-tumors. It is needless to say that onr merchants are auxiuU3 to extend their business relations with ill: interior, embracing Florida, and to accomplish this will sell to customers upon the most liberal terms known to the tiade. EX-GEY. FORREST. This gentleman, who, it was slated, had fled the country, is stili in Tennessee, nud Ires rtcentiy addressed a letter to the editors of the Memphis Avalanche, in which he says no act or «f preesion of his could have fur nished ground lor the report that he had left for parts unknown. He states that he has been true to the pledges of his parole, aud that ho has been silent and unobtrusive, quietly laboring upon his farm, and regrets that his seclusion is so oiteu disturbed by re ports ia the newspapers, which are as unjust to the government as to himself. Hu. de clares that his destiny is with the American Union and that he shall cohlribute nil his in fluence toward strengthening the govern ment, sustaining its cred t, and uniting the people once more io the bonds of peace and affection. —A good vein of oil has been struck in Columbia county, Ky. .
