Were examined, who testified that they had’ never 1 heard any noise, but one of then' strted that he would not allow his fhmily to go to them. Waring Bussell, Esq., appeared aa counsel for the prosecution, and after summing up the evidence ad dressed the court in a brief speech, atsHn g that this house was a public nuisance, and aa such should be abated for the benefit of the public. In rendering hi* verdict, Judge Bronson remarked that freedmen appeared to hold the opinion that free dom meant to do what they pleased, and to violate the laws whenever they were disposed to do so; but it meant no such thing; it left them free agents to work for themselves and do what they pleased to sam a livelihood, but it did not give them a license to break the laws or keep nuisances to the detriment of their neighbors. In this case the defendant could not plead ignorance, as he had admitted the fret of telling his wife not to hold these gatherings, aud knew this the parties in the house hid already been fined. He would therefore fine him twenty dollars, and said the owner would have to turn him out of the house, ac cording to law; that he would have to give Mm thirty days’ notice to vacate the premises. Shooting Affair Last Evening—Man Killed on Bull Street. Last evening, at about a quarter of seven o'clock, the report of a pistol was heard In Bull street, nearly opposite the Screven House, which caused the death of a man named R. A. Clune. From what we could learn last evening, the deceased and a couple of men were standing in front of the Screven, quarreling, when one of the party fired a pistol,' the ball from which took effect in the body of dune, who staggered into the Screven House, and, after suffering apparent ly intense agony for the apace of ten minutes, expired. The ball entered the right side, under the arm, and lodged In his body. What was astonishing, not e drop of blood was perceptible. Policemen arrived on the spot soon after the occur renoe, and took Mr. Henry Tow, keeper of the Morn ing Star saloon, in Bay Lane, into custody. Upon be ing taken to the barracks a pistol was found on his per son, with one chamber recently emptied. He was locked up until the coroner holds an investigation of the affair. CoL H. H. Eden, Coroner of the county, being sum moned, soon arrived on the spot, accompanied by Dr- Fish, and had the body removed to a place of safety. It being almost impossible, owing to the excitement prevailing at the time, to hold an Inquest, the investi gation was postponed until tM« morning at ten o’clock when Dr. Fish will make a post mortem, examination! There were various report* In circulation during the night, but not being able to vouch for the correctness of any of them we refrain from giving them until the whole evidence in the case shall have transpired before the Coroner's jury. The deceased wts a native of Montreal, Canada, and was about thirty-two years of age. He haa been a Capt. in the Confederate army, and was a painter by trade. Until within a short time he haa been an ofllcer on the police force, but for a few weeks past has been working at his trade. pmsnos of the Crrx oe Bath.—The eteam- iij City of Bath, of the Boston line, which left her Ftiri yesterday about 1 o’clock, having on board two D!-* of the 12th Maine Regiment, was disabled »j«] about live miles below the city by the breaking ,4the connection of her force pump. Another Shooting Affair. Last evening shortly after seven o'clock a negro man, dressed in the garb of s United States soldier, was shot in the hsad and narrowly escaped death. From what we could learn he was walking down Bull street, aud when near the Presbyterian church, cor ner of Bull and South Broad streets, was accosted by a couple of soldiers who demanded money. He replied that ha had none, at which one of them pulled out a pistol and shot at him. The ball entered hi* head, about an inch and a half above the left ear, and lodged under the soalp. He was taken to the office of Hr. Fish, who examined the wound and found the ball which waa flattened on the aknlL The doctor gave the wounded man come direction* and told him to come back thia morning, when he would be able to extract the ball. The wound is a very painful, but not a mortal one. This is the second affair of the same kind within au hour, and calls loudly for something to be done to pre vent persons from carrying and using firearms with out any regard to consequences. The Opera. ’•Ernani” was produced to a full aud fashionable house last evening, with Ghioni, .Maccaferri, Susini and Mancusi in the cast. The glorious music of the opera and the con amove manner in which it waa rendered aroused the audience times to something more like enthusiasm than we have witnessed on either preceding night. But the great feature of the season, the production for the first time in Savannah of Gounod’s celebrated new opera “Faust,” takes place this evening. The advent of “Faust” has been awaited with an almost feverish ex- aitemant, and we expect to eee a densely packed house to-night. Our readers need not be informed that this opera is founded on Gcethe’s celebrated novel of the same name. It baa been dramatized and adapted to the operatic stage of Verdi. Canissa's rendering of Margueritta, “the bright particular star” of thia opera, has met with unquali fied admiration at every theatre she has visited. She is all through the Marguerite of poetry. She is the embodiment of the poet as well as the composer. The temptation, the struggle with passion, and the final surrender of the passionate woman's heart displays more of nature than of art. Her method of rendering the Jewel Song is touchingly poetical. She is not obf- ■'did not appear by what right he had been arrested.
