The Savannah Daily Herald SAVANNAH. TUESDAY MARCH 13. 1866. WOMAN’S SHORTCOMINGS. BY MRS. BROWNING. slip has laughed as softly as if she sighed, She has counted six, and over, Of a purse well filled, and a heart well tried— . Oh, each a worthy lover 1 They “ give her time,” for her soul must slip Where the world has set its grooving; She will lie to none with her fair red lip. Rut love seeks truer loving. She trembles her fan in a sweetness dumb. As her thoughts were beyong recalling. With a glance for one, and a glance for some, From her eyelids rising and falling; Speaks common words with a bashful air. Hears hold words, unreproving; But bur silence says—w hat she never will swear, And love seeks better loving. Go, lady, lean to the light guitar. And drop a smile to the bringer, Then smile as sweetly, when he is far, At the voice of an in-door singer; Bask tenderly benOath tender ryes, Glance lightly on their removing; And join new words to old perjuries— But dare not call it loving. Unless vou can think, when tho sung is done, No <»tLer is soft in the rhythm; Unless yon can feel, when left by one. That all men else go with him; Unless you can know, when upraised by his breath, That our beauty itself w'ants proving; Unless you can swear, 44 For life, for death!” Oli. tear to call it loving! Unless you can muse in a crowd all day, On the absent face that fixed you; Unless you can love, as the angels may. With the breadth of heaven betwixt you: Unless you can dream that his faith is last, Through behoving and unbehoving; Unless you can die, when the dream is past, Oh, never call it loving ! Tlie Fuduuk aud the United States. in the British House of Comnioni, on tlio 23d ult Mr. Waikiu asked if any, and what, representations had beeu made by her Majesty’s Government to tlie Government of the United States in reference to the F« man organization in America, and more especially as to the employment of United States officers, the issue of bonds of the so-called Irish Republic, ami tho threats to levy war upon the dominions of her Maj ty by that organization. He believed that President •Johnson was fully impressed with the necessity ol maintaining friendly relations with England, and hav iug issued proclamations preventing the United States from interfering in the Chilian and Mexican difficul ties, he wished to know how it was similar steps liud not been taken to discountenance tho Fenian ment. The Chancellor of the Exchequer in reply regretted that tlie subject had been introduced, as the turn lected for introducing it was most uiopportum-. and no good result could be produced by diseussiug it. Noth ing had been stated by the honorable member to *ho\* that any act had been done in America in violation of the American law which it was the duty of the American Government to have punished aud redrei ed before.the ordinary tribunals. Her Majesty’s Gt eminent had seen cause to deplore much that had taken place in the United States in reference to the Fenians, but there was no cause to justify them in making representations to the United States on the subject. He believed that public opinion both in Ire land and America condemned the proceedings of the Fenians, and it would be undignified to remonstrate with the American Government so long as no positive act was committed which amounted to a breach of neutrality laws. Mr. Olway thought that representations ought at ouce to be made to the American government. Mr. Oliphant ridiculed the movement so far as the American organisation was concerned, and denied that it possessed either the sympathies, respect, or admiration of the American people. After some remarks, by other speakers, the subject dropped. McKAY, BLISS & I/O., Commission Merchants, i jKALERS iu White Oak anil Yellow Pirn- Timber of *•' all sizes.
