LARGEST CIRCULATION III THE CITY AM MUSTY ~ FRIDAY, MARCH 16, 1866. 1$r Sen our supplement this morning lor a variety of reading matter. Tli lease ok the Hun. S. R- MaI.LORV.-~ The numerous friends of Hon. S. R- Mallory of Florida, will be gratified to learn that he has been released by order of the President from confinement at Fo r t Lafayette. The New York News of the lOtb, states that orders were received on the previous day di recting his discharge on parole. Mr. M. was the last of the prisoners confined at Fort La- layette. LonofUtamihlp San Jacinto. The telegraph announces the destruction of tho favorite steamship San Jacinto ot the Empire Line, at her dock in New York yes terday morning. Five hundred bales of cot ton, almost her entire cargo, were destroyed. The San Jacinto sailedfrom thi9 port on Sat urday laBt with a load of 712 bales of upland, and 57 bales of sea island cotton. The destruction of Savannah steamers within the past year ie almost without a parallel in the history of aDy port in the country. The burning of tho San Jacinto is the second in- siuuce within a short period, of a steamship from Savannah taking fire at her dock in New York. FRESSE1DE1 VS. SEXIER. The constitutional amendment proposing a new basis of representation was defeated in the U. S. Senate on tho 9th instant. The vote stood twenty-five for to twcuty-two against the measure. Before the vote was tnkeu, Mr. Fessenden of Maiue, in a speech advocating its adoption, look occasion to pay his respects to Mr. Sumner, who voted in the negative. The Washington correspondent of the World says Mr. F. devoted one hour to Sumner, whom he reviewed in a most scathy manner, politically and personally. That he exposed with a lively sense of ridi cule. the absurd metaphor and scholastic platitudes of the impracticable and theoreti cal Massachusetts Senator. That he de nounced his propositions as visionary, his eloquence as a myth and bis speeches a9 a show, adding that if a member of Parlia ment read a speech from slips, be would be coughod down by bis indignant fellow mem- Mr. Fessenden had collated several pages ,.f Sumner's insane rhetoric, which he read, to u intense amusement of the Senate and tue ga>«ries. The Senate without re gard to party, *» v8 u, e writer, relished the castigation, and wu. n ^e Maine Senator had finished, Sumner was - 0 completely annihi lated, that he barely had *»ng e enough left to say nothing. The defeat of the amendment,^,j c t, cma _ nuted irom the reconstruction committee, shows that the Radicals are hi great .o D fu- sion, if not broken, and the castigation of Mr. Sumner by a leading Senator ot bis ow party indicates that the R^nni’!’'''’'’ ~— on the woiehl disruption. The late raid of the Italian Opera company through this region haa set the people of Macou, Ga., and of Charleston talking of erecting opera homes in those cities. Notice.
