Police Matters.
In the Mayor’s Court yesterday there were several
of the hardest looking specimens of humanity that
we have eeen there for many a day. The first case
was that of Jno. Enis, charged with being drunk and
disorderly in the house of Mr. Riley. The policeman
testified to the fact of arresting him and Rmtjng him
in possession of a large cavalry revolver. Another
witness testified that he bad come into the house and
was flourishing the pistol and threatening to shoot a
woman who was in the house. The witness said the
accused acted more like a crazy man than a Bane one,
and he was forced to call on tile police. The defend
ant said that he had bought the pistol from a negro
and being loaded he fired the charges off into the air;
that when he was in the house it was not loaded, and
hs had no intention of using it on the woman. Mayor
Anderson then dismissed the case on the payment of
coBts, and ordered the pistol to be forfeited to the
city.
Another man was charged with abusing and striking
a female in her own house. The arresting officer sta
ted that he had been called upon by a little girl to ar'
rest the man who she said was beating her mother,
but that he knew nothing of the affair himself. The
woman was not present in court but had sent her
child, an intelligent looking girl of some six years of
age, who said her mother was sick and unable to be
out. His Honor asked her how old she was, when she
replied six years. Being too young to take an oath
His Honor concluded not to take her statement. He
then dismissed the case and ordered the costs to be
collected from the informer.
Jas. Henry was charged with being drunk and lying
in the market. The officer Baid he had to hire a wagon
intain, Capt. I to take him to the barracks as he was very drunk.
irleston, ma- | The accused was a mere boy, not being over eighteen
or nineteen years of age. Upon being asked what he
worked at he said he was employed on the Central
Railroad. He knew nothing of the occurrence nor
how he came to be asleep in the market
Jno. Edwards was up for the third time for the same
offence. This individual seems to think he has a per
sonal friuds I t0 8° B leep wherever he pleases. The
hero he en. | Mayor u P on being informed by Chief Anderson that
he could find employment for him at the barracks,
sentenced him to be confined at work therein for the
space of one week and be fed on bread and water.
Another man named Duval was charged with the
same offence, getting drunk. He stated that he was
employed in the Central Railroad depot and admitted
that John Barleycorn had got the best of him on this
occasion. Ilia Honor fined him three dollars.
