GA. u fine article U|iou iue i«... tribute so much—nay far the greater poriK... —to her prosperity, and felicitates the city upon the increasing advantages that are des tined to accrue to Aer by her sagacious tap ping of the railroad sysiem io Fonda; for, after all, was it uot Savanuah enterprise anil sagacity that made a cats-paw of Florida legislation, by which the Live Oak Branch was projected and built, and which the Herald may* with propriety call a “pet measure" of Savannah? Speaking of the wealth which her various railroads are con tributing to Savannah, the Herald conies to speak of the advantages of the Savannah and Gulf Road, aud says: This road passe9 through one of the finest cotton growing regions of the south, and from its juxtaposi tion with two-thirds of the northern boundary of Florida, may be considered as of almost equal im portance as a medium of communication to a large area of that productive State, in advance even of the completion of the connecting link between it and the Florida road. The enterprising citizens of one or two commercial towns in Florida, aware of the commercial tendencies to which we have adverted are making strenuous efforts to counteract them. Nevertheless, Savannah, from her superior facilities of transportation and shipment, and her large capital in furnishing supplies, must obtain the larger share ot the products of that section ; und on the completion of the branch from Lawton to Live Oak will command the whole. This is an important feeder to the Gulf road, us we have had occasion to demonstrate beret*»- fore, und therefore deeply concerns and interests the trade of this city. For the early establishment of tins connection we must look to great exertions and the acknowledged financial abilities of our President, Mai. Screven and tlie President of the Florida road, Col. Houston, both of whom have a just appreciation of the value of the mutual interests involved in its early consummation. We frankly acknowledge that branch Toad, tapping as it does a rich and fertile country, of which Savanuah is the rightful entrepot, is a speciality with us, and we cannot refer to it without expressing a deep interest in its success. But putting aside for the nonce-this pet measure, we think our city has reason, in view of what has al ready been accomplished to congratulate itself upon the increased prosperity which awaits it, and its rapid recovery through the means mentioned, from the de- j preAslon and loss of trade during the war. j We copy the above to show the people ot Florida what clear conceptions those of Sa vannah have as regards the appropriations ot' her advantages to their use; and with what confident complaceucy they eau view their ability, through the medium of Florida's blunder, to reap the rich treasures which are properly her own ; aud which, if wisdom rule the hour, may yet be saved to herself. The eliorts which this paper has made to arrest, and arouse the attention aud pal riot- ism of Floridians to a proper regard for the iuteiests of her own railroad system aud Sea ports, has attracted the attention olt he Her ald, aud the editors of that able sheet, but confirms the position we have assumed, when they say: “The enterprising citizens of one or two commercial towns in Florida, aware of the commercial tendencies to which we have adverted arc making strenuous iT forts to counteract them." Yes, indeed : the “commercial tendencies 1 ’ ot the present railroad system of Florida is to build up Georgia railroad interest, and Georgia sea ports at the expense ot the railroads and seaports of Florida, and consequently of that of the whole State. Will our people be instructed by the teachings of Savannah, and of the Herald, if not liv the urgent appeals of their own press ?—b'hrula Cniun. LAURANT. WAYNE & SWEAT, AUCTION.
