A Xono Passage.—We understood from a Custom
House oflioer that the ship Golden Light, from Liver
pool, was outside the bar yesterday. She has been
three months making the passage, and the crew have
been on short allowance for some time. She is loaded
with salt, and is drawing nineteen feet of water.
A Row on Shipboard.—Early yesterday morning
some of the sailors of a ship lying near the Exchange
dock, who had been out enjoying the 17th of March
probably, went aboard the ship and commenced a row,
which came near ending seriously. One of the men
had hit leg broken and was otherwise seriously injured.
The captain, however, soon quelled the disturbance
and locked the offenders up.
The Fire Last .Vis;lit.
At about eleven o’clock last night the carpenter shop
of Mr. Bankston, on Broughton street lane, a few
doors west of Whitaker, was discovered to be on tire.
The building and its contents were of such an inflam
mable character that the fire made rapid
progress, and the flames soon burst through
the roof and rolled up in great volume,
endangering the neighboring buildings. The
Are department arrived on the ground with their usual
promptitude, however, and within fifteen or twenty
minutes from the time the alarm was given half a
dozen streams were brought to bear upon the burniug
building. The fire was confined within the building
in which it originated, but tbe lower and upper stores
of that building with their contents of stock, tools,
etc., were entirely consumed.
The building destroyed was of brick, two stories
high, fronting on Broughton street Lane, and be
longed to the Courier estate. It was rented by Mr.
Bankston, late Winston k Bankston carpenter. He
had an insurance on the stock in the shop of $25,00 in
tho North American Insurance Company of New York,
J. S. Thomas agent in this city.
A young man named William Farrelly, while stand
ing imprudently near the burning building in the
yard at the rear, was struck by bricks from the falling
wall. He was picked up insensible and carried into
Heidt’s apothecary store, where he was attended to by
Dr. Charlton. It was found that he had sustained no
injury beyond some flesh wounds upon tbe head and
face and a slight bruise on the chest, no bones being
broken. He was conveyed to his home.
The lire was without doubt incendiary.
We regret to learn that Mr, J. E. Russell, an indus
trious and worthy mechanic lost a valuable set of tools
by the fire, on which there was no insurance.
There were other individual losses the particulars of
which we could not learn last night.
The efforts of the fire department on the occasion
were worthy of all praise, giving assurance that the
destructive element will always meet an‘energetic and
successful opposition from our well organized and har
monious firemen. The Metropolitan, the Germania,
the Washington and Oglethorpe Companies were
promptly on the ground, and did effective service; and
conspicuous among the combatants of the devouring
flames were our faithful blacks, whose stalwart arms
kept time with their “old time’’ refrains, which
swelled in merry chorus above the din and clamor of
the exciting and boisterous scene.

Kcsaway.—Yesterday afternoon a horse, attached to
a light wagon containing a lady and child, ran away
on the Thunderbolt road, overturning the wagon into
a ditch, and throwing the occupants out. It appears
that the gentleman who was driving the vehicle gut
out when opposite the Catholic cemetery and went
into the graveyard to talk to some ladies, leaving the
horse standing alone. Ending himself loose the ani
mal started off at a moderate gait, when a horseman
came clattering along, and the noise startled him into’
a run. The rider overtook the carriage’ and whfle at
tempting to stop the horse he turned aside into a
ditch, upsetting the wagon. The shafts were broken
and it was otherwise injured, and at first the lady was
supposed to be badly injured; hut it fortunately turned
out that she was more frightened than hurt. The
horse and vehicle were the property of Mr. Feelev, at
the Pulaski House stable, and we learn that the horse

Slight Fire.
About eleven o’clock on Saturday morning an alarm
of fire was created by the partial burning of the wood
work of the ceiling of a frame two-story tenement on
Stuart street near West Broad. The fire is supposed
to have originated from a defect in the chimney, and
but for the timely efforts of the firemen, who were
soon on the spot in large numbers it might have been
disastrous, as the house was surrounded by a number
of wooden buildings and the wind was blowing at the
time at a high rate. The house was the property of
Hiram Roberts, Esq., and was occupied by John
Mathewson.
More Shooting.
About half-past one o’clock on Saturday som e six
or eight shots were exchanged near the corner of
Jones and Montgomery streets, two of which took ef
fect on the bodies of two U. S. soldiers belonging to
the 12th Maine regiment. From what we could ascer
tain there wore five or six soldiers in that neighbor
hood, and being noisy and troublesome, a policeman
interfered to arrest them, when they showed fight.
He sprang his rattle for assistance, and some negroes
interfering, the soldiers handled them rather roughly,
when one of them pulled out his pistol and fired. At
this the firing became pretty general, and the scene
at one time wore the look of a lively skirmish. There
are two or three stories told of the affair, and our re
porter was unable to get at the truth of it. The sol
diers, however, were takou to the hospital barracks,
and from their appearance on Saturday looked as
though they had been the victims in tho business.
Their faces presented a shocking sight, and they had
every appearance of just having come out of a prize
fight. One of them received a flesh wound from a pis
tol-shot through the right arm, and had one eye al
most closed. The other received a shot from a spent
ball in the left eye, almost destroying the sight. They
say that they were shot while going away from the
scene of action. As far as we cau learn, no arrests
were made.
Nearly a Riot.
On Saturday evening about half-past six o’clock a
negro soldier was abusing and cursing a soldier in the
market, when a policeman attempted to arrest him.
Another negro soldier then interfered and attempted
to rescue his companion. He struck at the policeman
when some citizens interfered and helped to arrest
them both. Other negroes then interfered and the
fight became general. At one time it threatened to
end in a terrible riot, but the soldiers were finally
carried to the Barracks, and were yesterday morning
turned over to Major Manning, now commanding this
post.

Opening Night at St. Andrew's Hall
The announcement made by Mr. Raymond this
morning of the opening”of St. Andrew’s Hall for the
week, with the favorite tragedian Ed. It. Dalton and an
able support, will be hailed with delight by every
theatre-goer. To-night occurs the complimentary
benefit of Miss M. E. Gordon, tendered by the citizens
of Savannah. The “Marble Heart” is the piece
selected for the occasion, Mr. Dalton and Mr. Theo.
Hamilton appearing in the leading characters, and the
beneficiary sustaining her favorite role of "Marco.”
Mr. Raymond appears with Miss Gordon in the after-
piece.
With the new additions to the already excellent
theatical appointments of St. Andrew's Hall, and the
presence of Prof. Richter’s orchestra, this will bo a
cosy and pleasant place of amusement, and will doubt-
leas be crowded to repletion duri ug the coming week.
Celebration of St. Patrick's Day.
The Irish Union Society met at their rooms, No. 110
Bryan street, on Saturday, for tho observance of St.
Patrick’s Day. At ten o'clock the society formed in
line, each member being clothed with the uniform of
the association—a neat green satin sash festooned at
the left aide and ornamented with the emblem of the
crosa and the badge of the society. They then marched
In procession, preceded by the Irish flag, to St. Pat
rick's church, where Pontifical High Mass was cele
brated by the Very Rev. Bishop Yerot. The ceremony
waa very imposing, and the mass well rendered by a
good choir, assisted (in tbe absence of an organ) t>y a
fine melodeon. The Rev. C. C. Pendergast, a native
of Savannah, preached a very fine sermon. The church
waa crowded during the exercises, and many were un
able to obtain admission. The society turned out
about forty or fifty men, and their fine appearance
was the subject of much comment, although fewer in
numbers than in past years.
The anniversary waa also observed in an appropriate
manner by the Hibernian Society. The annual elec
tion of officers was held at the Marshall House in the
morning and resulted as follows :
President—Jno. J. Kelly.
Vice President—Jno. McMahon.
Secretary—Jno. R. Dillon.
Treasurer—L. J. Guilmartin:
Shortly after eight o’clock iu the evening the Hiber
nians sat down to an elegant supper at the Marshall
House. His Honor Mayor Anderson and many other
prominent citizens were present. It is needless to say
that full justice was done to the viands under which
the tables groaned, and that the usual feast of reason
and flow of soul and other things followed. Many
brilliant speeches and happy hits were made and all
passed off in a highly agreeable and successful man-
