SAVANNAH, TUESDAY MARCH 30, 1806.
THlfc SABBATH.
*T *1* *»WA*D BULWEB LITTON.
Freah glide* the brook, end blows the gale,
Vet yonder halts the quiet mill!
The whirring wheel, the rushing sail,
How motionless and still!
Six days of toll, poor child of Cain,
lily strength the slave of want may be;
The seienth-thy limbs escape the chain—
A Godhatll made thee free !
Ah, tender was the law' that gave
This holy respite to the breast.
To breathe the gale, to watch the wave.
And know the wheel may rest!
But where the waves the gentlest glide
What imago charms to light thine eyes!
The spire reflected on the tide
Invites thee to the skies.
To teach the soul its noblest worth
The rest from mortal toils is given;
Go, snatch the brief reprieve irom earth
And pass—a guest to heaven.
They tell thee in their dreaming school,
Of-power from old dominion nurlod,
When rich and poor, with jus ter rule,
Shall share the altered world.
Alas, since time itself began.
That fable hath but fooled the hour;
Each age that ripens power in man,
But aubjects man to power.
Vet every day in seven, at laast.
One bright republic shall be known;
Man’s world awhile hath surely ceased
When God proclaims his own!
Six davs may rank divide the poor,
O Gives, from thy banquet hall I
The seventh the Father opes his door,
And holds his feast for all!
Wit vs. Billingsgate.
The Southern Exchange speaking of the recent
suppression of the Richmond Examiner says :
such writers as Pollard should be frowned down
by all true men. Wit and irony are better weapons
now-a-days than double-leaded venom. See how
smartly the Petersburg (Va.) Index turns the tables on
its radical opponents.
•• Qur private opinion and belief is that there are
authentic documents now in the library of Yale Col
lege—or they will be there when needed—to prove that
Bunker Hill Monument marks the site of Babylon the
Almighty, that Carthage was no more nor less than
Portland, Ostrium Nahant and Boston, in fact, AthenB;
that Homer waa Professor of Belles Lettres at Har
vard, aud Patinorus a member of the Cambridge Yacht
Club ; that Friscian taught a grammar school at Mont
pelier, and Arc Impede a was a private tutor of Chem
istry in ConcurdJi^that Sti«$Peter was a Cape Cod fish
erman. and St. Matthew a cfillecfor of the internal rev
enue at Stonington ; that Phidias owned a brown stone
quarry in Maine ; and Socrates founded the Atlantic
Monthly ; that the Aeademia was the walk under the
yew trees at New Haven, and the Colossus of Rhodes
a statue which strided from Nantucket to Martha's
Vineyard ; that Plymouth Rock is all that is left of the
Tower of Babel, and the Connecticut Riverran through
Paradise ; that Stonington is the’site of Tyre, and
Merrimac fast colors the dies that made that city fa
mous ; that the old Temple of Diana at Ephesus was
not burned but is now Faneuil Hall and that Herodo
tus and Wendell Phillips were the same persons ; the
fable of Romulus and his brother being suckled by a
wolf (lupus) arose from the circumstance that their
mother was the first Vermouter who looped her dress
es ; that Mercury was the ancient name of Ben But
ler’s family, and like everything else in New England
the family had gone on perfecting itself from the
atart ; that the sun ehlnes six hours per diem more on
that favored spot than on any other between the poles;
and that Noah’s family were so much elated at an alli
ance with the Websters of Massachusetts that they got
up a dictionary to commemorate that fact; that St.
Patrick was head centre of a Feuian in Bangor, and
St. Andrew kept a distillery in Lowell ; and finally
that the miileniuni will begin in-Boston, and will not
bo allowed to extend beyond itB limits, except by a
two-third vote of the tax-payers of that heavenly city,
excluding all who have at any time in their most se
cret thoughts expressed a doubt of the propriety of
hanging Jell Davis and General Lee on a sour apple
Come, gentlemen of the Press, if you must nesds
have a bout, do put on the gloves, if you please. ’ ’
The Bill for the Use of the Hocse in which
President Lincoln Died.—The Tribune’s 'Washing
ton special speaks of Mr. Peterson, whose residence
opposite Ford's Theatre, was forever an object of
reverence by the American people, from the accidental
circumstance of its sheltering the dying form of Presi
dent Liueoln on the 14th of April last. He has finally
received from the Treasury Department the amount of
his bill charged tor the trilling damage done to his
bed-linen and furniture. Among the items charged
in thu bill was $150 for injury done his carpet; $50 for
personal services; $2 for pas. aud a large number of
similar charges, amounting to $293 50. The modest
and patriotic Peterson also rendered another charge
for loss of time for several weeks after the assassina
tion, in exhibiting the room in which the President
died. The validity of this letter claim could not be
realized by the Secretary of War, who ordered it to be
disullowed.

The Vetoes.—The Macon Telegraph, alluding to
Governor Jenkm’s vetoes of the Stay Law and Home
stead bill, says;
"Gov. Jenkens has dissented from the Legislature
on three important mtaaares, and iu every case on
constitutional grounds. We are pleased to know that
a perfect entente cordiate existed between the two de
partments up to the hour of separation. Indeed, all Die
members with whom we have conversed on the sub
ject, have come away from the capital with most vivid
impressions of both the statesmanship and moral ex
cellence ol our popular Chief Magistrate. That he will
be true to bis trust aud meet every just expectation
of the people who elected him, we have not a doubt."
Voudooism in Indianapolis.—The Indianapolis
Herald says that the diabolical mysteries of voudoo
witchcraft are becoming fearfully prevalent among the
colored population of that city, having been introduced
by refugee negroes from the South. A nervous gen
tlemen who had a contraband servant girl, was hor
rified the other day to discover a ball composed of
hair, coagulated blood, toe-nails ond snail shells, sawed,
up in hie coat pocket. He ripped out tha infernal con
trivance, discharged the girl, broke the spell, and now
aleepa soundly.

Homeopathic Life Insurance Compant.—A life
Insurance company is about to begin, business in Al
bany. It proposes to issue policies of insuronce upon
the Uvea of persons who ire patrons of homoeopathy,
at ten per cent, lesrf than the rate imposed upon per
sons employing allopathic treatment. A similar com
pany exists in Cleveland, Ohio, and the General Pro
vident Assurance Company of London has also opened
a special section for persons treated by the homoeopa
thic system, at a lower rate of premium than that
charged on other lives. Statistics, it is aUeged verify
the propriety of this course. •, -
Quantrxll.—The Herald’s Washington special
gives the following particulars regarding the supposed
identification of Quantrell, the guerrilla: A man waa
arrested yesterday in Now York, find, in tte custody
of an officer, brought to this city last night, and is now
ix jail as the notorions Quantrell, who committed such
dreadful depredations in Missouri and Kansas at the
head of guerilla bands. Senator Lane and others,
from Kansas, identify him as the man. The Secretary
of War says that as soon as the identification jls fully
established he will turn him’ over to the Kafiaas au
thorities for trial. Persons have been sent for who
know him well, and who are expected here in a fen
days. In the meantime, he Is kept in close confine
ment.

Murder by a Child.—The following are the circum
stances of a murder recently committed in Litchfield,
Montgomery county, HI. A bound girl of the age of
12 or 14 years, was a week or so ago seoided pretty se
verely for some misdemeanor, and finally waa whipped
with a small rod. Everything passed-off in the morn
ing, well enough without any further difficulty. The
girl's special duty was to take care of three little chil
dren ; add going out to the barn as was her usual cus
tom to a swing that had been prepared for the chil
dren’s use, she took the youngest child (a boy) and
hung him in the swing until dead, then ran to thp
house aud told the mother of the child that a man
came into the barn, took the child and hung it But
as there could be no trace of a man’s track iu or about
the barn, the girl was arrested, after which she con
fessed, and said she took this method of redress for
the punishment she had received tha morning.—
3he now awaits trial in jail.
