The complaining officer testified to the feet of hia selling liquor, g*d ‘the defendant, upon being questioned, said he thbugbt he. bad a 11" cense; he had a store license and a United states li cense, and was under the impreesiou that the store license oovered the salo of hia liquor; that when he found it was nr pessary to have another n~—. he immediately applied to the Clerk of Council. He aaid he had no Intention of violating the law, tod was now willing to take it out Mr. Stewart aaid that the gentleman had applied to him on Friday last, but he had already been placed on the docket It reply to an interrogatory of ths Mayor, Chief An **td that-he had known the man for sometime, and that ha had an excellent character; that he had been a corporal in hia company, and that he did hot H4*k he would knowingly vlolat* this lew. Hia Honor then eeid h^. would gtv# the defendant the benefit of the doubt in thia instance,' aithoiljh tlieri were very few men who told Uquor but knew that it was necessary to have a license for so doing. He than dismissed the case. Jno. Riley was charged with being drunk, and abus ing his wife in his own honse. The arresting officer testified that he bad been ceUed on by the wife of de fendant to make the arrest, and that although he did not see him strike her, yet he saw the marks of vio lence on her person. His Honor then esked what kind of a house the defendant kept, and the Chief remarked that it was a very noisy one; that ha was several times about to put his name on the docket for keeping a disorderly house, and on the night In question want -to the Barrack* with the determination to do ao, but found it already there. In answer to a question the officer said the woman had been summoned but refused to attend, at the same time remarking that she was fined ten dollars for non-attendance, and now they might make the beat of it. Hia Honor then or- dered that the defendant be fined in the sum of thirty dollars, and ordered the wife arrested for contempt of court and to be lent to jail, this nuking ths third time that she had similarly refused to obey the order. A man was charged with being drunk In the street and abusing an officer in discharge of bla duty. The policeman testified that he picked up the defendant in Bay lane back of the Post-office, and that he had abused him. The prisoner had nothing to say in de fence, and was fined three dollars. St. Andrew’s Hall. Mr. Dalton's personation of Richelieu was the fea ture of the second night of Mr. Raymond's dramitlo season at St Andrew's Hall. In the portrayal of the varying moods of the crafty old cardinal—his imposing assumption of dignity, hia gracious benevolence to his retainers, his persuasive flattery, hia fierce inveotive, his passionate ■ emotion, hia rage and despair, Mr. Dalton was true to nature and faithful to the princi ples of hia profession. Mr. Dalton is giving a aaries of representations of rare merit and no lover of the drama should fail to tee him during hia brisf engage ment at St. Andrew’s Hall. The able support of Mr. Hamilton enhances materially the excellence of these performances, and affords an interesting opportunity to compare the merits of two actors of established popularity amongst us. The pieces thus far presented have been put on the stag? in excellent style and with strong casta, and have famished ths most enjoyable dramatic entertainments we have had for month* The hall should be crowded every night to do justice to Mr. Raymond’s enterprise. The plays of “The Iron Chest,” in which Mr. Dal ton sustains the character of “Mortimer," and ‘'Rob- ert Macaire,” introducing Mr. Hamilton and Mr. Ray. mond, make up the bill for to-night. Board of Health. In another column will be found the names of the gentlemen appointed by. hia Honor Mayor Anderson to serve as the Board of Health for the present and en. suing yoar. They will meet on Monday next, Maroh 26, at the Exchange Long Room, for the purpose of organization. Now that the warm weather is ap pproaching, it behooves our citizens to give particular attention to sanitary matters. By the enaoting of strict regulations and having them strictly enforced, our city may be made as healthy as last year, when the police and sanitary arrangements of the military made the season one of the healthiest experienced'for years. We already have intelligence of cholera and other epidemics making their approach from the West Indies, and by cleanliness alone we may prevent their appearance among up. A strict eye should be kept on all nuisances tending to create disease, and the citizens generally should mid the Board of Health in abating them. Arrivals at tbf^otels. .PULASKI HOUSE—W.
