The Savannah Daily Herald. BY S. W. MASON. SAMUEL W. MASON Editor, IV. T. THOMPSON, Anociate Editor. Official Paper of the City. LARGEST CIRSH LATIN II THE SITT ARB CRIHTY WEDNESDAY, MARCH I860. C3T See list of letters on fourth page. DEPRESSION IN BUSINESS. The last three or four weeks hare been remarkable f**r the general stagnation in every branch of buai- iio«s. Even grocers and provision dealers oomplain that the people eat bnt little and fail to pay for what tl«t-y eat, ami in all other branches of business every thing seems to be at a stand still. The trade with the South which during the latter part of last year assumed considerable proportions, ban been seriously interrupted by the difficulties re garding reconstruction, and manufacturers are un* willing to lay in large stocks of raw material while «’ong res a falls to mark out s financial policy for the future. The high price of living causes artizans and labor ers to fix a liigli price for labor, which will tend to etop improvements that were in contemplation, and all combined will seriously affect the revenue which is absolutely necessary to keep the wheels of govern ment moving. The above article, extracted from a North ern paper, is one of many similar assurances that the people of the North are beginning to feel the damaging effects of the delay in the restoration of the Union and the full re sumption, ns before the war, of trade with the South. The stagnation of business, about which there is such general complaint, the steady depreciation of gold and the con tinued downward tendency of general prices, have caused in some minds the apprehen sion that a financial panic is at hand. Al though not concurring in the opinion that there is immediate danger, we believe there is some grouud for the fear. It is ’apparent to the most superficial observer that busi ness houses which have no surplus capital are placed iu a dangerous position by the present aspect of trade. Their stocks having been purchased at comparatively high figures j e very decline iu prices must entail loss upon ihem ; buyers are not willing to invest at any rate of prices, and obligations are fall ing due. Tue strain, therefore, upon this class of houses is every day increased, and their ability to stand the pressure depends upon the length of time that the partial suspen sion of business shall continue. It is obvi ous to all that if tbe present condition of af- tairs grows worse, and continues long enough lo ruin the weak class of houses, the panic will Soon become general. The danger, if j font, and price* were unchanged. The .alee were not imminent, is certainly not «mnl» . neatly at 53a Me for State, 36 a 41o for unsound and y not remote , and I 52 a 53c for Bound Weetern; 30c for Jersey and 53 a 54c prepare to arrest it is a duty which de- ,or c ““da. 1 Cotton—The market wa* somewhat depressed by more liberal offers and an apparent disposition ou the part of buyers to hold off for lower price*.
