Ctf After of Labcekt.—On Monday afternoon a wo
man named Mary Constantino was arrested and taken
before Justice John A. Staley, charged by Mr. Peter
O’Keefe with removing a quantity of his household
goods. Yesterday morning the Justice heid an exam,
ination. It was in evidence that the woman had taken
a mattraas, a clock, watch and pistol, with other arti
cles from Mr. O’Keefe's house, on Sunday night last,
which she had left at a house somewhere on TnHiaw
street, telling the person with whom she left the
goods not to allow any person to have them. The
prosecutor said the defendant must have drugged him
as he was in the house at the time of the robbery.—
There was a rich scene in the Alderman’s office during
the examination, the “lie” being freely passed, and
defendant made an attempt to commit violenoe on the
prosecutor. After hearing all the evidence in the case
the Justice committed Mary to jail in default of bond
to await her taial at the May term of the Superior
Court.

The Fastest Time os Record.—The steamship Gen.
Barnes, Cupt.Thos. H. Morton, of Wilder & Fullerton’s
line, arrived at this port yesterday from New York in
the unprecedented time of fifty-eight bonrs from dock
to dock. The Gen. Barnes hove to off the bar at 1 a.
m. yesterday and came up to the city at high water, 7
o’clock. She had a full freight and seventy passen
gers on this remarkable trip. The Atlantic Coast
Mail Steamships have earned for themselves an en
viable reputation, but the time above recorded for the
Gen. Barnes is something hotter even than was
looked tor, having beaten the famous time of the old
Knoxville, which was fifty-seven hours from dock to
dock.

Violation of Citt Ordinances.—Two men were
before His Honor Mayor Anderson on the charge of
stevedoring without having taken out licenses. They
were both employed by lioeused stevedores, and it
was in evidence that they acted in the capacity of fore
men, although the men employing them said they did
not receive any more wages than ordinary la
borers. The witnesses ftheir bosses) said that they
did their own business, but haviug more than one ship
at a time it was almost impossible for them to be con
stantly on duty, and left the defendants to tako charge
In their absence. His Honor stated that the law was
Intended to protect stevedores of limited means; that
If men were allowed to take several ships and put men
in charge who were not licensed, a man with capital
could prevent those of small means of even earning a
livelihood. In the hearing of the first case Mayor An
derson decided to flue the defendant in the sum of fif
ty dollars, but auother and similar case being brought
up he revoked his decision and deferred both of them
until Friday next, in order that he might have time to
examine into the merits of the cases.
Casting Rubbish into the Rivee.—The Captain of
one of tho New York steamships was before the May
or’s Court yesterday on the charge of throwing coal
ashes into the river. Officer Latham testified that as
the ship was coming up the river, coal ashes were being
hoisted out of the fire room and east into the river.
One of the deputy Harbor Masters testified to having
seen the cinders and ashes thrown into the river, and
said he could not be mistaken; that he had seen at
ieast two buckets ao disposed of, and after the vessel
passed could hear the rattle of the ciuders going
through the shoot.
The Captain knew nothing of the matter and sum
moned the engineer of the ship who denied tho oc
currence haviug taken place. His Honor fined the
defendant in the sum of twenty dollars, and remarksd
that the fine should properly be upon the engineer, as
he was supposed to have tho entire charge of that
business.
Another Captain was up on the charge of casting
rubbish into the river at tho market dock. He said it
was nothing but some white pine shavings and pro
duced his second mate, who also said that it was mere
ly shavings which they had procured from the plan
ing of the deck and with which they had made a bed
for Borne pigs. He was fined ten dollars.
