morniug a man named Looney waa charged with be
ing drunk and disorderly in one of our hotels. An
officer stated that he had been called upon to make the
arrest, and had also seen the disorderly conduct him
self. He bad known the accused before and had never
seen anything out of the way in him. One of the city
reporters who was present volunteered his evidence
in the matter and said if His Honor would "let up”
on the defendant he was sure the like would not occur
again. The man was fined one dollar.
Another individual named Nixon waa charged with
taking a nap in the market place, contrary to the regu

hand, and must have been tight to have lain there in

U. S. Direct Tax Commission.
The Government has been very fortunate in the ap
pointmeut of Hon. T. P. Robb and J. C. Bates as Direct
Tax Commissioners for the State of Georgia. We be
lieve the people of Georgia, and especially those of the
portion devastated by Gen. Sherman’s army, will find
the above named gentlemen courteous, and, so far as
their duties will permit, generous towards all who
come within their jurisdiction in the collection of the
direct tax.
We can say in behalf of the citizens of Savannah
and those of the county, that they have been most
agreeably disappointed in these gentlemen. The
Commission has most generously given the citizens
of Savannah forty-two days over the sixty allowed,
and now with continued generosity has extended tho
time ten days longer to the city and connty. Let the
defaulters respond with adequate promptness and
avoid the penalty.
