first day of April (inclusive) to the first day of
October (inclusive) of each year, the members of
the city watch shall he at the guard house, nnd
commence their tour of duty ut the hour of nine
o’clock, at night; and from the first day of October
(inclusive) to the first day of April (inclusive) of
each year, the members composing tho city watch

Bee. 6. Be it further ordained, 1 lmt it shall he
the duty of the superintendent of the city watch,
or officer in command at the guard house, to dis
pose of the watchmen in such u manner as tlmt all
parts of the city ftmy he equally guarded and pro
tected, us far ns possible; auit he shall divide the
privates in two divisions to he denominated the
firstimd second division, each to he commanded by
a division sergeant, and each division to ho distri
buted us mores aid, when on uctivo duty; and on
ly one division shall he on active duty at a time,
except in cases of alarm, or other necessity,when
’ they shall ho marched to the place of danger or
necessity, as the odicer in command, or the Muy
or limy/order; und the watchmen shall he so »t-
gulutcd, as not to he every night in tho same ward,
but they shall bo allotted to tho various wards und
places within the city alternately and iu rotation,
and foe said watchmen shall patrol and watch
throughout the respective wards and pluces as

required to arrest at night, and take into custody
all felons and rioters, all disorderly or suspected
persons who may ho found wandering or misbe
having themselves,' or in any manner disturbing

may in any manner assault or oppose or resist
them when engaged in tho discharge of their du
ty, nnd nil slaves und free persons of color, who
may ho found out of his or her house or enclo

by bunging his lantern in tlio direction from which

the watch are on duty, bo stationed at the guard
house door, whose duty it shall he to communi
cate any alarm to the ollicer iu command, and Jp

Sec. 11. Be it further ordained, Tlmt no watch

See. 12. Be it further onjuined, That if any per
son be convicted before the police couit or
council for resisting, opposing, or molesting any
of the officers or members of Uie city watch in the
execution of his or their duty, the offender may
he fined in u sum nut exceeding one bundled dol
lars for each and every offence, to he collected
and enforced as the laws and ordinances provide,
ami the said oilicers or privates of the city watch
aro authorized and empowered, in case ol urgen
cy or liece sity, to demand tlio aid and assistance
of any citizen or oilmens, and all and every per
son rcfusiiig'or neglecting to give such aid or as
sistance when required ,mny, on conviction before
t’ie police court or council, he lined iu a sum not
exceeding ono hundred dollars.
Sec. 13. Be it further ordained, Tint it shall be
the duty of the superintendent of the city watch
to make out a monthly pay roll of the oilicers and
members of the watch, to he presented to the Muy
or or acting Mayor on the first of edfch month lor
his approval and order thereon; and tho said su
perintendent slmll make n report in writing to the
Mayor or acting Mayor or any three Aldermen,
at the police office every morning at 10 o’clock,
in which he shall detail the order and routine of
the several divisions, sub-divisions and patrols,
note the misconduct of irregularity of every and
any watchman on duty, and shall relate the occur
rences of the night, and the deputy superintend-
eut shall .report to the superintendent the occur
rences of tlmt portion ol the night in which he
may have been on duty, to enable the superin
tendent to make the report, required of him by tl i<
section, nnd shall attend at the police oliice at 10
o’clock for the further explanation to tlio Muyor
of such occurrences.
