This Elixir may he adopted in all those cases hi

symptoms, which are often ns distressing os those

Tho Elixir of Opium is not only superior to the

more mild, permanent nud uniform in its effects
but the preparation possesses also a superior ad
vantage to their solutions, in noi being liable to
decomposition or deterioratiotl from variable tem

which the latter are exposed.

Dr. Mitchell's triuls of tlio Elixir of Opium in tho
Hospitals. ,
New-York, Feb. 8th, 1837.4
Dr. J. B. McMunn-—Dear Sir: I have made re*'
peatul trials of your “Elixir of Oniuiu” in the
City and Marine Hospitals, and find itlo possess
the anodyne mid sedative powers of fiie ordinary
preparations of Opium, without producing the
excitement, headache, nausea and constipation,
which in many cases render those preparations ob
jectionable. ’ Its effects aro more permanent than
those of Morphiu. Yours. Ac.
C. L. MITCHELL, M. D„
Resident Physiciiln New-York Hospital.
Those who take Opium and its ordinary prepa
rations, cannot he ignorant of tiie fiict Unit its dis
tressing und pernicious effects result from the
operation of its deleterious principles, and that
the tremors, languor uud lassitude with which it*
devotees are afllicted. and for which lliey repeat
the dose to relieve, ore sensations of its own cre
ation.
But in consequence of tho exclusion of those
deleterious principles from the Elixir of Opium, it
is not liable to derange tho functions of tho sys
tem. nor ill jure tliccoiistitution and general health;
thence its high superiority iu all thoso cases, in
which the long continued and liberal use of Opi
ates are indicated atul necessary to ullay pail mid
spasmodic: action, and induce sleep and compo
sure, as iu cases of fractures.biirnsorsctdds.cau-
cerous ulcers, and other painful utl’ectious.
And to tlioso persons,' who, from necessity or
vitiated indulgence, have been accustomed to the
use of Oniuiii, this preparation will iillbrd a gra
tifying substitute by which they uny relieve them
selves from the thraldom of pernicious uud too
frequently inveterate habit.
Directions for using tiie F.Uxir of Opium.
To n child a month old, or younger, give from
half a drop to a drop; to a child about sTx months
dd, from 3 to 10drop*; and to adults, from 10 to
60 drops, (and even double or treble that much, if
thepainaud othersymptomshe severeati'lurgeut)
mixed in two or three tea spoon’s full of water,
according to tiie size of tiie clo-e. As the ad n n-
istmtion of every medicine should he govern* d
by its effects, it is proper to begin with the smallest
dose; aud increase or repeat it at proper intervals
until the desired effect* are produced.
OCT* JOHN B. McMUNN. of South Middle-
town. Orange County, New-York, who alone is
the discoverer of tlio Elixir of Opium, is tho
only iii.iiiiifiicturer of it. And none can bo genu
ine without his uamo written iu full on tiie outside
label.
