Again they say he wn, reluctantly forced by hi*
officers to the pursuit of Proctor and Tecutnseh
and that he did not plan that expedition, nor did
lie command in that brilliantbattle on the Thames,
tho result of which reflects so much honor on the
American arms: this too in the fuco of such proof
ns the noble old Roman, the gallanthoro of Kings
Mountain, the unsullied and skilful soldier of two
wars, he who was twice Governor of Kentucky,
my native State. Isaac Shelby and the immortal
Com. Perry who was attached to the General's
family and by his side during that action : Also
the statements of Col. John Speed Smith, a high
ly respectable and tailented gentleman ofKy. one
ofthe leading men of the administration party,
and who was acting os vuluutcer Aid on that oc

stands high in the estimation of his countrymen.
Also his too regular Aids Col. Charles S.Todd,
who then as now maintained au elevated standing

Louis, a gallant soldier and accomplished gentle
man, who fought under Gen. Harrison at Tippe
canoe, and who was constantly attached to his
family until Gen. Harrison's retirotneut from the
army in 1814. These gentlemen all testify in the
fullest and most ample manner, to the bravery,
skill and good conduct of Gen. II. ill that battle.
1 will not attempt a comparison between the
two opposing candidates for tho highest office in
thegift oftny people on earth, but merely refer
4he American people to the acts of Gen. Harri
son, both military and civil, which have adorned
bis character, from the age of 18 years,
when he left the home of hi* youth, where he had
been raised in tho lap of luxury and ease, with
the commission of Ensign in his pocket, given
him by Washington the father of his country.
His history from that period (1792) to the present
moment, is intimately connected with tho history
of the West, he is identified with all the loading
measures ofthe west; lie lias hail the confidence
of all the Freider.ts from Washington down to the
Aroidistration of Jackson; under that reign of ter
ror and proscription, he was made an early victim.
His enemies are resorting to all the low subter
fuge to which desperation cau reduce a party,
they accuse him of concealing his opinions, and
again ofexpre/wing his opidians too freely. They
say he is an abolitionist. To ostablish the fact,
they hire a low and degraded reptile to make oath
that he is ono. The Abolition Societies publish,
1 think, teu newspapers in tho United States,
each of them denounce Gen. Harrison inconse*
nuance of his Anti-Abolition doctrines, *They
jeeuse him of every crime that their wreckless
imagination can invent, even that of being a
black cockade Federalist, and obtained the cer
tificates ofsupqranuntcd men, and those too who
have been known as unbecile in mind and destitute
ofhonorable feelings. To such men they apply to
establish their base and iufaraous falsehoods. But
ha is like pare metal, the more it is rubbed tho
brighter it becomes. They have been forced to

By tho Stcampacket Charles Doming, Cnpt.
Dknt, we hnvo received the Jacksonville Advo
cate of Tuesday last, from which wo extract the
following :—
INDIAN NEWS.
We hnvo been permitted to nmko tho follow-
ingcxtract from a letterto a gentleman of this
place, dated Newnansville, August 10th, 1840.
Mr. John Delaney just arrived at this place
from Fort Tarver, on Payne’s Prairie, informs
us, that while a negro fellow, the property ofMr.
John Hope, was hunting in Tarver’s Field, he din-
covered five Indians in the net of carrying off
com. The negro, being armed with a double-
barrelled gun, charged with slugs, immediately
fired upon them. On thy discharge ofthe first
barrel, he killed one on the spot. The other four
immediately fled, when he discharged his second
barrel, wonndinfi one severely. Tho truth of this
may bo relied on.
In' addition to the above, we learn thnt on
Wednesday, of last week four families were mas
sacred in the vicinity ofNew River. Signs of a-
bout fifty Indians were seen. A company of dra
goons had been started iu pursuit.
It is also rumoured, that on Thursday, seven
Dragoons, with two women, probably soldier’s
wives, were killed fifteen miles from Black Creek
on the Newnansville Hoad. We givo this as a,
doubtful rumor, however.
Gen. Leiqh Read, or Middle Florida, hns been
appointed by tho President to the command of
the Brigade of volunteers ordered to he raised by
the Secretary of War for the service in Middle
and West Florida. When operations commence
again against the Indians, the regular fqrcn aro
inteuded to operate East of the Suwannee, leav
ing llio defence westward of that river to the Vol
unteer*.
and a whig majority in tho popular vote, of the
Slate. North Carolina must inevitably beredem-
od. The energies of an armed world cunnot now
prevent it.
From ell appearencoa there will, within the
next four months, be auoh a fall of sterling Ex
change ns to inditoe pretty large shipments of
specie (Votn England to the United States. Com
pared with Into years there will lie but a limited
J cmand for bills, on account of tho restricted or-
ers for goods, while there will bo a supply, press
ing on the market, IVom the large shipments of
Flour which have been recently made from
Northern ports. The dealers in Cotton will reg
ulate themselves accordingly in their estimate of
the nrlncs of tills article, an the opening of tho
market. A low exchange is equivalent to a reduc-
tinn in its value, being independent of tho rela*
tion between supply and demand. We look,
therefore, for the arrival of apecio in tho United
States fot investment in Cotton and Sterling
Bills between this and the month of Jauuary.
Charleston Patriot,
A letter from Isaac L. Farrow, dated August
6th, 1840, states that the schoouor Wanderer.

York, was cast ashore about two miles South of
Capo 11 otteros light house, cargo (188 hales cot
ton and 85 casks rice) saved, nearly dry. Ves
sel tight and in good order.—Charlejkon Mercury.
Harrison in Pennst/lvania—Tho Log Cabin buys
of Pennsylvania were, hitherto well inclined to
the opinion thnt tho Keystone State would go for
Harrison; but since the voice from the great West
has sounded so gloriously in their ears, all doubt
seems to bo at an end. Our fYiends, of that State,
now say, Pennsylvania ii for Harrison, and no
mistake.
7ho Globe.—'Tho Globa, who, just before the elec
tions West swore point blank on 10,000 for Indi
ana, &c. now soys the result is a mystery that no
mnn con explain—rather “a pressure that no hon
est manshould regrot.”
It is said that the Post-masteifat Camden, N. J.,
has aUsquatulatf.il for Texas with $700 of public
money. He has probably gone to seo after Lynch,
the Into Pnst-manter of Pittsburg, who iiasstolen
12 or $15,000.. “Seta thief to catch a thief,” is
n wise old maxim, and one practiced upon to tho
letterhy Van Buren.
Reports having been put in circulation of the
prevalence of disease in Nashville, we deem it
proper to say that the health ofthe city was nevor

“HAVANA, AUG.5.—Wo have had a brisk
demand for Sugar during tho greater part of the
last month, and the exports from hero aud Matau-
zas. amount to 74,233 boxes.
The shipping season which may now be consid
ered atnn end has been an uuusuatiy active one,
and the exports since tho 1st January, exclusive
even of wlmt remained over from last year are
fully equal to tho production ofthe piovious crop.
The stock now remaining constitutes therefore
tho excess of this year’s production over tho last
one,r-n I we estimrt' fiat stock here and at Matun

The shipments of white Sugar to Russia a-
monntuow to 141,600 boxes; a great part of
which has, however, been cleared lor Cowes und
other port*.
At tins moment them is very little inquiry for
Sugar, as may he expectod at this time ofthe year.
Tho prices of middling and inferior sorts have
given way and may declino still farther. We
quote browu 44 a54rs. (15s. Uda 18s. Id. per

It is now ascertained that the injurious effect
caused to the coffee plant by the long drnughthas

and although tho w'euther has since been very fa
vorable the corp must ut all events fall short of
the previous oue.

Cotton —The Colton market shire our last has con
tinued very quiet, the caused notices in the early
part ofthe week still existing to prevent sales, except
to a very moderate extent; former prices, however
are well sustained. The sales embrace 1000 ‘bales

There have been no arrivals since oar last.
Flour—The demaud for Western Flour for export
to'England, noticed in our last has since continued to
a fair extent, and the sales ofthe week of Ohio and
Gcnessee will notprobably fall much short of 30,000

371; tho later price for fancy brands; and Ohio, at
i5 12} a 5 25 for round and flat hoops, though of round
there ts but little to be had at the former rate. These
prices it will be seen, fully sustain the advance 110-
tic id in the early part of the week and although the
receipts fora few days past have materially increased,
yet owingto tho greatly diminished stock now on hand,
(probably not exceeding 30,000 bbls. of all descrip
tions,) holders show no disposition to accept lower
rates. There has also existed a moderate demand
for city use and the eastern market. Georgetown has
sold in parcels for shipment to the West Indies at 15

Gelatine Capsules of Pure Co-
paiva Balm.
T HE Cnpavhr Balm is, of all the medicines
employed in combating the chronical and
acute gonorrhoeal affections, also the blennorhcei!
called whites; the only ono, tho specific action of
which has never been doubted, and to which
physicians havo in consequence given the prefer
ence; but its nauseous taste and smell aro the
causes of its b<ring reiectod by many patients.
This is the reason why so many experiments
havo been tnado in order to discover some mode
of disguising its taste, so that it might bo taken
with less repugnance; but hitherto this has been
but imperfectly effected, and ajwnys by addition
of some active substance which modifies its pro
perties, nnd thus destroys its . chemical constitu
tion nnd its physical churacter. I therefore offor
n mode of administering it in such a state that it
cannot occasion the slightest repugnance, and
this without submitting it to unv alteration. Aly
method consists in enclosing ft in the Gelatine
Capsules.
