“ We are in the midst of desolation; the whole
tevee in front of the town is gone; my newspa
per office lias taken a trip down the river in com
pany with several other buildings, and I have on
ly had time to save the materials of the printing
establishment. I am completely exhausted with
fatigue and beg you to excuse my not giving
more ample details of this public calamity. I can
merely add iu a few words, that more than eight
arpenta front by an average depth of about 300
feet has been swept away, and it is my opinion
that it will not slop tliprc, for every thing seems
to indicate that the ground will continue to slide
off for several days to come.”

NEW ORLEANS, SEPT.S.-Renarhs-A slight
degree of activity has been evinced during the Inst

undergone no improvement whatever. Every week,
however, brings us nearer to the desired period when
a return of active business transactions wdltake place
and we shall be relie ved from'the dull monotony that
has prevaded all branches of commerce /or nearly
three months.
The weather continues very warm, and the health
of the city is excellent; in fnct, the season is now so
far advanced, that we are relieved from all appre
