Cheer up my daughter ! hope less though thou art, never was the aid of thtfe aged arms de nied to the children of loirow. I know that thou art faint and wen y, as the heart ft icken by the hunter, as the wounded chief in the day of battle ; and when thou failed, no (tone shall point out thy bed.—but cheer up my daughter.—Yet a little lon ger, cheer up thy (Length, Oh wanderer of night —near is the dwelling of the deceitful Crad mor, Oh yellow haired daughter of Morva.—Tell me not, thy eyes shall behold him no more; lay not that they are dim alrea dy,—that the (hades of the xnounrain beckon thee away ; for the heart of the Bard of Fin gal even now bleeds for rhec 1 Alas 1 thou art hastening to the land of darknels : but when the harp founds in the hall of Crad more, he too shall have a sigh for the wretched course of die daughter of Morva!—Open thy gates, thou dtftroyer of peace ! fpcak comfort to the heart which thy cruelty has broken, —blcfs her with a lrmle, thou bane of virtue.—Alas ! he comes not— drowned in the mirth of longs, and slushed with the wine of joy, he hears not the expiring groan ot the daughter of Morva—cold blows the wmd through the win try thorn,—but he hears it not; ruihlefs is the temprft that beats the head of the daughter ofMor va—but he feels it not—though now he be at peace nor think of thee, yet venomous as the fer peni’s fang shall his confidence be ; and the wild fowl of the cliff lhalllhriek out his destiny. The gale of the evening lhall bear thy sighs to him as he re turned from the chafe—the wind of the delert lhall howl to him the name of Morva.—ln the visions of the night he lhall lee thee—the cricket (hall whis per of Morva.-—ln the field of battle, nervelcts lhall his arm be ; powerleis as the lhadows on the hill —the cataract from the mountain lhall tell of thee ; and the leaves of the sorest lhall make him afraid.—He lhall cali on the injured fair one, but Ihr will not hear—he lhall invoke a blcffing ho,n the yellow haired daughter ot Morva—but the wind lhall leaner his prayers like the down ot the thiltle, and fwift as the bolt of heaven lhall be his delpair. THE FORCED STORY. Lord Kelly was, like his pro totype F alltuff, “ not only witty himlelf, but the cause ol wit in other men.” Mr. Andrew Balfour, the Scottilh advocate, a man of coniiderable accompanied by great formality of manners, happened to be one of a convival party when his lordlhip was at the head of the rable. Afcer dinner he was as ked to sing, but absolutely re fufed to comply with the prts fing folicitarion of the company. At length lord Kelly rold him ’hat he Ihould not escape; he must either sing a long, tell a story, or drink a pint bumper. Mr. Balfour, bring an abste mious man, chose rather to tell a story, than incur rhe forfeit. “ One day, (said he, in a pompous manner) a thief, in the course of his rounds, saw the door of a church invitingly o pen. He walked in, thinking that even tbert, he might lay hold of something. Having Iccured the pulpit cloth, he was retreating, when lo J he found the door (hut. After fume con sideration, he adopted the only mean of escape left, namely, to let himfelf down by the bell rope. The bell of course rang, the people were alarmed, and the thief taken, jult as he reached the ground. When they were dragging him away, he looked up, and emphatically addressing the bell, as 1 now address your lordship, “ Hau it not been,” said he, c ‘ for your lon £ tongue and empty bead, 1 had made my escape /” HUMOROUS . Affair of honor. Some weeks since, two hair dreflers having quarrelled in a public house, re tired to fight it out. The one was a tail lank man ; the other short, thick, and plethoric. Af ter a tew rounds the combatant whole rotund ry unfitted him for works ol (.siting prowess, jult found breath to whilper lonh “I’ll fight no more.”—l he o cher anxiously catching the half formed founds, alked, “What does he lay?” “ Say,” cried one of the seconds, “ why he lays he’ll fight another hour.*’ I he devil he does,” returned the other, then I’ll fight no long er>” Fatty was accordingly de clared vilior, and led from the field in triumph. ON THE EMPLOYMENT OF TIME. TIME is never more mts pent, than when we declaim a gainlt the want of it ; all our a&ions are then tinflured with peevilhnefs. When we have deducted ail that is ablorbed in lleep, all that is inevitably ap propriated to the dem ands of na ture, or irrcfiltibly cngrolled by tnc tyranny of customs ; all chac is palled in regulating the lupetlicial decorations of life, or is given up to the reciprocation of uvility to rhe dilpoi.il of o chers ; all that is torn from us by the violence of dileafe, or lto- Icn imperceptibly away by laffi iude and langor ; we lhall find chat part of our duration very lmall, of which weean truly call ourlclves mailers or which we can lpend wholly at ®ur own choice. Many of our hours are •oil in a rotation ot petty cares, in a constant recurrence of the lame employment’s; many of our provisions for case, or happi neis, arc always exhaulted by the day ; and a great part of our exiltence serves no other purpose, than tnac of enabling us to enjoy the rest. Jealousy not only fours the temper, but oblcures the under llanding ; and, like many other violent human efforts, generally produces the very evil it is on the watch to prevent. Remark.. Some persons who have great estates left them, breakfall in plenty, dine in po verty, and sup in infamy.
