My Mother—oh ! rectrend name—

As when in lisping accents sprung,
Thy dear name from my infant tongue.
Borne down with age, oppred with grief,

To cheer the eve of life's fad day,
And drive corroding cares away.
77 1 E HONEST WOMAN.
I From the French of M. Provqft D'.
Earner.]
A MARRIED man, who
had a lucrative [dace under gov
ernment, kept a rniftrefs. His
wife, who was young and beau
tiful, with concern perceived him
withdraw himfelf from home,
and treat his children with indif
ference; but having iound out
the cause, (lie relolved to have
a private interview with her rival.
“ Madam, (said (he to her, a
rnonglt other remarks,) I am
the wife of M * * *, your lover :
feeing you pofieffcd of so many
a’tradions, 1 am almost inclined
to forgive him his infidelity ; but
as it is impoflible for me to live
happy without him, I am come
to obtain your succor against
yourlclf. All mv husbands for
tune proceeds from his place,
which he may loon be deprived
of. He has no other property
to leave his children, excepting
n good education ; ; rid it the
little he has amafied by a pru
dent economy, is spent from
home, his children can hope for
nothing from him; and they
mull, looner or later, find them
frlves irr indigent circumltances.
With the beauty you pofiefs,
you nr ay easily find a richer man
th,n M**\ Let me then owe co
you the return of a husband 1
de rly love : an honelt fa i ily
will owe their happiness to you
and will be ever grateful for it. ’’
What answer, think you, did
the Financier’s Miftrels make
to his Wife ? She addieff.cl her
in a jelling tone, and fa.d,
“ Madam, you have charms to
fix the heart of your husband ;
but fune fa e will have you and
1 to be r.vals, it is not for me to
conltrain your bufband’s incli
nations.” The lady retired,
grievoully conc.trncd* for ading
as lbe had done, and would nut
mention the circumllances to her
husband, for fear of incurring
h s anger, and nuking the l>reach
wider between them: but he
was told of it by his rniftrefs
with an air of insult; and this
indecent raillery failed not to o
pen the eyes of the husband, and
made him renounce from that
day to imperious and inlenfible
a rniftrefs ; attach himfelf to his
wife, whole conduit he admired
a* well as the full fentimems
with which ftn had inspired him ;
and beftaw on his children thole
carelfcs which were their due.
