REPUBLICAN.
SAVANNAH, July ij, 1806.
Yesterday the City Council re-ele£ted
JOHN Y. NOEL, Esq. Mayor of thi City.
The United States brig Hornet, has arrived
St L’Orient, in 22 days from New-York.
Accounts from Martiuico, received at New
bern N. C. mention the arrival of Jerome Bo
naparte in that Illand, from Caye e; it was
reported he intended Jhortly to fail for the U
nited States.
A letter from a refpedtable commercial
house in Liverpool, to another in New-York,
dated the 7th of May, fays, “ Our Cotton
market has remained steady since the 26th ult.
but the corn market has become extremely
dull for wheat at 425. to 12s 6'd. per 701b5.. &
fine flower 50s. per barrel.” The poftcript to
the letter mentions, that the writers were that
| moment allured, that the exports of corn from
Dantzitk to England is allowed; and, if so,
that the price of wheat miift fall.
The Journal du Soir.a Paris paper, of the
SOth of April, contains the following article in
a letter from Rennes:
“ Admiral Villeneuve, who commanded the
French fleet at the battle of Trafalger, and who
had been lately debarked at Morlaix from on
board an English ilag of truce, killed himfelf
in the night between the 22d and 23d of April.
V/e are entirely ignorant of the cause of this art
of desperation. Ha was found in his chamber,
pierced with five wounds, made by a knife in
his left fide. It is fuppol'ed, from the polition
in which his body lay, that after having dab
bed himfelf, he threw himfelf on his bed, lean
ing upon the handle ol his knife, that he might
thrust it in deeper, and thereby accelerate his
death.
Extract of a letter from a gentleman at
Detroit, to mercantile house in Albany,
of which he is a Partner, dated ‘June I,
1806.
“ Since my a'■rival at this place there
have ftveral reports been made to Mr.
S. Griftvold, our adding governor, by In
dian trade: s, from different parts of the
country, of the frequent feeret councils
held by the Indians, under pretence of
puffing laws to oblige their people to be
come sober and induttrious, by applying
their time to itnpr v:ng lands and living
after the manner of the white people ;
but knowing their prart-ice of diifimvla
tion r.nd treachery, we were suspicious
that tbeir meetings wire to concert mea
lures to make an incurlion into this coun
try—plunder the inhabitants, and retire
This occasioned a sense of danger to
spread amongst the p ople. But all ho’
this timely notice has beeu given, I fear
w j have been deficient in providing a~
gainit the dangers to which, from the
remote situation of this place, we are
particularly exposed. The vast extent
of the frontiers, the fcatteriag situation
of the settlements, the nature of Savage
warfare, together with the exact know
ledge the Indiana poflefs of every part of
this country, make me fear that the in
habitants who are not under the imme
diate protertion of the lort, will find
their refiilance ineffe&ual.
“ I have deferred writing you on this
fubjedt before for tear of giving an un.
necessary alarm, not being fufflcienlly
affined of the truth of the reports. Wc
are now uo longer in doubt, that the
Indians are preparing to commence war
against the Untied States, and we daily
expeA an attack r.t th : s place. We are
well informed, that th y an unusual
quantity of provifior.s arm ammunition in
their pcffefiion.
“ Tbcfe accounts are corroborated
by an c xpr.-fs from Fort Wayne £ou the
Miami] lent by the commanding officer,
aud the arrival of the brig Adams from
Michilunaekinac, where the inhabitants
were all under arms, and one half on
guard every night Between 5 and 600
Indians were assembled on the Iffand,
whin the Adams failed, with great’pre
tenfions of fnendfhip—but the com
manding officer of that post, has no
doubt of their hostile intentions whene
ver they find ihemftlves fufficicntly
strong ; and well knowing their treadle-1
ry, be will not trust to their outward ap- \
pearances, but keeps in readiness to dr.
fend the fort against any attack which j
they may meditate upon it.
“ Tlicfe circumllances afford cause cf
thegreatell alarm, r.nd we have been in )
council for these three days, for the pur*
pose of taking every p< ffihie deieufivd
pi (.caution, and have at lad tefuived to i
build block-h ruses in different parts ofj
the territory lor the protection of the
inhabitants.
“ Guv. Fluff his not arrived—his
presence is much w ih-d for at this time,
in order to call out the mii.tta on actual
; duty.

MIRANDA.—After so many ah
furd and contradictory accounts rs this
person, we are enabled to present our
readers with one which may be relied
on.-
A brig from Birbadoes went lip the
Bay yefferday, from on board of which
a paifenger forwarded fome Barbados
papers to 3 gentleman in this place, who
Las since favored us wilh them, from one
of which will be found the article refpeft
icg Miranda.
This expedition taken with unfuffici
tnt means, and conducted in the moft un
fkdful manner, and with unaccountable
criay, has terminated as might hare been
experted.
It was reported at Rarbadoei that ad
miral Loehrane intended to furnilh Mi
randa ‘.vith Fm: aid, with which he pro
posed to urn w hi-, vumpt on the cunti
nent ; but this v. • ucuot, because wc
have been informed from good authority,
that if the people were prepared and
difpofid for a revolution, that Miranda
is not the man in whom they have con
fidence. This was well underllood at
1 tinidad, with which and the Main
there is much communication, though the
nations are at war.
ExtraS of a letter from a gir.t!;-nan arri -
ved on IVednefday, and who proceded
up to Baltimore, to a gentleman in this
place.
“ 1 Barbadoes the 10th inst.
(June) Tortola the 13th, and St. Tho
mas 14th. By the Barbadoes papers,
tnclofed, you have all the news there.—
I law a letter from admiral Cochrane, da
ted off Port Royal, Martinique, the nth
inst. to a gentleman at St. Thomas,
| which, stated, that France had declared
war againll Sweden and Denmark, and
that all veffrls under thofefl ags were de

General Miranda —This celebrated
and diftingu.fhed officer arrived here this
morning on board the American ship
Leander, capt. Lewis, in company with
his majesty’s fluop of war Lillv, which
fell in with the Leander on the 25th ult.
off Grenada. General Miranda, who
had failel from America in January last,
on an expedition to give freedom and
independence to South America, touch
ed at Jacquemel, and failed again from
thence 011 the 7.7 th oi March, in compa
ny with the fchi'oners Bacchus and Bee,
and arrived near O’Cumana, between
Porto-Cavailo and Laguira, on Sunday
.evening the 27th of April ; on the fol
lowing morning the coast being alarmed,
ttie Leander was attacked by two stout
| guardar cottas, one a brig of twenty 12
pounders, and the other a schooner of
fifteen 12*6, b- th full of men.
Ihe Leander succeeded in besting
these off but the Bacchus and Bee being
in fhorc, endeavoring to land a detach
ment, were captured, having feverai
.confidential officers on board. Incon
sequence of this difalter, and the Lean
der being in want of water, gen. Mi
randa put into Bu n Ay re, and failed
from thence on the ift “ntfaiit, intending
for Trinidad ; but having fallen in with
the Lilly, and received fome information
from capt. Campbell, of that fliip, h*
proceeded to Grenada, and from thrnce
to 11113 iffand, probably with a view cf
conferring with our refpertive comman
ders on the future execution of this lau
dable enterprise ; in which every Bri
tiih fubjedt and free government mull
wish him the amplest fuccef*.
The Bacchus and Bee were two unar
med pilot-boat fcl.ooners.

very short paflage cl thirty days from* Lisbon.
Spoke on his paflage, off the Rock of Lisbon, an

the good of his brother seamen, that the capt.

out it, he thinks he would certainly have sent
him into port.
