Charles Cope, c. m. September t swurei.m; I r has ever been our wish to avoid pubiica finns of a personal nature, well knowing that they are not grateful to the feelings of our readers; but, when a man feelr him felf injured, and resorts to a public vehicle for redress, with his signature attached to his publication, painful as it may be to our feelings, yet as Editors of a public organ, we are compelled to give publicity to his ani madversions ; but, not without opening the fame channel to his opponents. The per rons accused in the following Address to the “ Public,” are of high Banding in St. Marys. The writer having publilhed the original deciiion of the Arbitrators, the public will be more able to judge of the merits of the publisation. TO THE PUBLIC. X N drawing the following statement, i. 1 intend merely to caution all for eigners against the snares which fome of the inhabitants of St. Mary’s know how to lay with such (kill At tirft I thought [ had reached an hospitable fliore, and hailed the land with gladness j but hot’ few there the friends of humanity t how many, like a greedy hord, are ready to devour the prey that unfortunately vilits those coasts ? This I fatlly experienced as the following faAs will demanftrate. Having captured the brig Diligence, on the 19th day ot July lafl, 1 directed my course towards the inlet of the river St. Marys, and arrived at the bar at j o’clock, P: M. but not being able to im'. the buoy, I thought it fakft to tack and Hand off. On the 20lh, the pilot, ’•lr. Franltfter, came on board and said that he would bring the prize vefLl over the bar, and on the 2 111, at 4 o’clock , f m when arriving within piihW (hot jof the bar, this truly fkilf'u! mariner, dc | dared that lie did not know what to do, land he seemed quite loft. Ten minutes j I after the Diligence ltruck and remained I aground until midnight, when havin.’ j got afloat again, 1 tacked and flood out, I the pilot then gave orders to trail ;m ----1 chor—he soon after railtly attempted to 1 go io over St. Andrew’s bar, where we again cast anchor, at the diilance of a b-mt 10 miles from. St. Marys, t! e vef led ttien laying in 3 fathoms water, and ; having 5 feet water in her hold. 1 haftsncd then with my crew to load the schooner Liberty. Captain Rohr i t Ru dolph, from St. Marys, w ith a pert of the brio’s cargo, and took a tew hands fiom on board the iatter, to help to puino and to load. The increasing din ger loon compelled us to run the brig aihore on the beacn of the I hind ot Cumberland, where u e loaded the Ichoo ncr Liberty with another part e>f the cargo; and after the brig bilged and ’ entirely wrecked aud 1011, I left one of my men to take notice what followed the wreck- Thus it plainly appears, that I never iiiar.ihned the ir: a , ‘:j; I was r.ct igncrait 0/ evbat port cf the forgo tvat tavrj. Although the statement of the abort facts doc* not altogether coincide with j thecontents of my protest, yet it is for. 1 i ded U ‘on strict rerccity—the reason ot j this contradiction is, that ray ignorance j of the Engli'h language gcre 3. tell I scope to the LithßL tran fact or, who inserted a lahliood ir. the public lr.iiru atcul •fprouSl aid teciamioa.
