For Site, by JACOB IDLER O Cos. October 10. 41. 4:8. WE w uld advise thol’ethirafteri wto have been Jo busy in defaming good and honelt men, to pay attention to the following ex trad!—they will behold in it their true cha radter*—in it they will behold themfelve*, as in a niiror, stabbing the reputation of the honest Patriot—the reputations of honest men —Let the principles which it is inten ded to illustrate link deep in your heart*— let it convince you, that the reputation of a good man is dearer t him than life. May it serve to convince you of the infamy of your condudts, and therehy ftinrulate you, in future, to adts more honorable. Oltervationt on Defamation. Some prize a reputation as much as they prize life, and fome there are who value a good name much more than ex ilfence itf.if. The last mentioned class is corr.pi.fed ofthr fe wliofc views are not confined to things which are but of mo mentary date ; and of such a3 polfefs minds that dignify the huir.au race.— Theft think •* a good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favor rather than filvtror gold.” To attempt to tijurc the reputation of him who holds reputation dearer tlian life, is a transgression which the greatelt I repentance can fcarccly atone for ; it is a crime which cannot admit of even the colouring of jullitication upon any pnn ciplu whatever, except wc ha : indubi table proofs of the guilt of the person who is the objcA on whom we iirflidt Condemnation and reproach Dcamatiou assumes various forms, in its and lferent tours through the uuiverfe ; for it vilits every c ime, tioweVcr ditl -nt ; no fpet inhabited by Adam’s polferity is a llianger 10 its wanderings. Defama lion fomettmes sallies forth like an open enemy, and auacks the victim of its ven geanceinthe face of day; and at other times, it Ihrctlds itfeif in the mid .tight malk, and adaffin like, deals its blow, in the dark. When a man is attacked in the former manner, he is better able to make hisdefence, as his foe attacks him openly as such ; in the latter case, he Hands to chance at all, and datk scandal mak-afpoitof his chara£!er. Backbiting is the mod dangerous as •.veil as the moll effectual way to black en another’s reputation. Toe moll vil lainous garb of insinuation. The wietch who peeps out his head from the croud, and cries, “ I know something, which if told would prove a detriment to such a man,’’ and then fneaki back to his lur king hole again, is the molt dcfpicable character ot society ; the croud quickly catch the found which he iffucs fdrth, and every one is busy in their conj.df ures concerning the person thus vilely attack, cd ; and as the greater part of mankind are 100 apt to judge unfavorably, the accufcd is thought to be a thousand times more guilty than he really is, and often judged culpable, when entirely in noccut. Behold the countenance of the deftming inlinuator— you may read in his fealurts the conduct he practices ; the demon of inifehief fits enthroned in Ins eyes, and furies fv.tll his brealt, ra ging for utterance. Defamation is often found under the roof of envy. The envious man cannot bear the splendor or merit ; conscious of his own diminutiveness, he looks up with artguilli to the greatness which Ihines in the conduct of another, he lets h.s invention to work in order to find out fome failing in the a&ions of the man who excites his envy ; fume failings he may doubtlcfs find ; for “ what man is there that liveth and tranfgrcfletii not ?” having found a foible, he mounts the ilagc of defamation, and blows the trumpet of scandal through the city— “ Wrath i cruel, and anger is outrage ous ; but who is able to Hand before envy ?” 1 he double-iongucd defamrr deserves to be ranked with the outcallo of the uuiverfe, the offals of human nature.— He who begins with foft words, and speaks plausibly of the objeA he intends iu the end to ctnfure, doeb it with a viev. to exalt the objed a little at full, in or dcr that his fall may be greater. Such mifc'iable wretches generally incur con tempt, and are despised by every hontll heart : they fcldom have penetration e nough to call a veil over their own igno rance, while they pretend to expi fe the failings of another, but arc often so weak in their intellects, and so unguard cd in their cxpreffijiis, that they give fufficient occalhm for the bearer to doubt not only tlieir own ppriiy, but alio to doubt the veracity of what th y relate. 1 happened or.ee to fall in company ; with a person of the above description ; he began by fetiing forth in ti very con fpicuous manner the virtue and amiable nefs cf a certain character ; after a long nil of eulogiums, he added, anti he is a charafter 1 much esteem and revere— but—But what I cries a person who was present, and had been attentively lifltn tng to the encomiums which had been so tavifh’y bellowed—but he has failings, continued Mr. Double Tongue. Lord bless me ! exclaimed the other, without doubt he has failings ; and pray, cou tinued Jjcj can you find a man who is dtfeended from the potlerity of Adam who is free from imperftiflions ? Bu', fays the other, hie failings are of a capi tal nature —He then proceeded to give an account of them, and related traniac tione of lo black a kind, in which the character be had been but jufl before prai* ling was concrred, that we all for a mo-1 incut itood atiouiihcd, & bluthed for the depravity of our fellow creatures. After Double Toogue had finifiied his relation the person who iuterupted hitr.jjft be* J'ofc. ag-in a<!.’ -” 1 L ’ • j rys t e, and is this the ciisr-cter vbcm in the beginning of your (lory you iuior. med us that you much eiteemed and re verred ? Double Tongue recolie&ing himfelf, ablufh of eonfufion overspread I his features, while the sneer of contempt went round the room ; be instantly dar ted from hi* chair, turned round, and looking at his watch, exclaimed, devil take me ! I promised to call at 5, at four o'clock, and it is now half pad five ; the time has dolen away quite imperceptibly ; gentlemen, I mud beg to be extufed. Having said this, he took his hat, bowed, and pr cipitately left the room—Thus do these infignifi cant defamers of reputation expose their ignorance, folly and rafeality. It is a common observation, and I be lieve it has truth for its b ifis, that they who are mod deserving ot ccnfure tbi-m ----felves, are generally the mod forward to censure the fauhs of others, and arc mod lavish in their epithets of afcufe.—- If rtafon had any irfluence, we might suppose, that those wno had experienced the frowns of fortune thetr.felves, would he disposed to coinmderate the misfor tunes of others, indcad of censuring ard abuling them ; but so it is, that we of ten find the fortunate moie inclined to pity the faulty, than those who have been faulty thcinfclves. Reputation is dear, and we ought to be careful of auothet’s good name. We should judge charitably of our neighbor’s conduct, and fay but little ol any one, when we cannot fp. ak to his advantage. “He that keepeUi his mouth, keepeth his life ; but he tfiat openeth wide bis lips, shall have deltiuction.” JUVENIS.
