‘i he 27th September was a day of grta re
joicing at Schwirz, on account of the opening
of the diet. It was composed of deputies
from all cantons, except Fribourg and Le
man. Aloys Reding made a speech upon
the occasion, and was appointed prefident*
London , OElober 19.
A paper of last night communicated the fol
lowing intelligence contained in a letter from
Calais :
“ I have the honor to inform you, that the
Firjl Corfu! fer our from Paris the ceth of Ven
demaire, (Oft. 12 1 to go to Rouen, Havre,
Boulogne, Calais, Dunkirk, &c. Such is the
report of the day. We exr>ed him here the
beginning of next w r eek. What I can allure
tr> O
you is, that M. Mengaud, commilfiry-gene
ral, hasfet out to-day to meet him.”
The above intelligence produced in the
fame paper the following comments :
T his cannot but excite fome astonishment
and uneaftnefs in rbis country, \ f the informa
ricn may be conlidered as authentic, and we
can fee no good reason for doubting it. The in
tentions of the chief cental wiii probably *be
revealed to us only by a thou, and ir is perhaps
no great violence to probability, if we enter
tain the suspicion, that the vilt of the chief
ccnftl to’jthe seaports nppofite to the English
coalt, is no favorable omen for this coun
try. We have within these few days endea
vored to open to the public mind the Haiation
of this country with relp-d ro the French al
Jiance. The circn-nftances between the two
countries, we vvill frankly own, excite appre
hension in our mind, that the continuance cf
Mpeace cannot be long. We are fatisfiea that
Tninifters will do (very thing in their power
For the prefervatiou of peace ; bur fucrifice>
joay be demanded wlvch the honor and in
terests of the country forbid any min liters ro
make. Much as we and fire peace, we mull
ever think war a Idler evil than cl ["honor.
We notice this article principally on ac- |
count of the comments, which, as die paper
is connected with government, defervts atten
tion. With refpecl to the* in.c'digence irfelf,
we cannot but imagine that rhe paper has been
imposed upon. Surely if Bonaparte had id
Paris upon such a tour, which he would of
course vvifh to be as publicly known as poffi*
ble, the Moniteur, of Friday lair, which we
received this morning, would have been in
truded to announce his departure from St j
Cloud . But the apprehensions which this pa-!
per exprefles, of the fliort continuance of the j
peace, are, we feir, but t.o well founded.
Our por s begin already ro wear j more ac
tive afped—and diipatches follow each otirei
with the greateit rapidity.
The fupplv brig failed from Peri/mouth vtf

Such are the warlike indications, and such |
the intelligence which we received this morn- *
ing from Porif nouth.
4 God avrrt from human nature the tremend
ous scourge of war! But iGve can only enjoy
peace by facrifices and fubmiflions, wounding
to the honour and Lterells of our country, the
fcourje of war, tremendous as it is, is prefera
ble to such and difgracefu! peace*
All that could be done to maintain tran
quility has been done by us. The treaty irfelf
amply proved to all Europe our pacific wifnes
and intentions. But France fee ms to confider
that, hecaufe we did much to put an end to
hofliiities, we will endure any thing rathei than
renew them : (lie thinks that, because we love
peacewe will bearinfuic. Sheknows little or our
vigilence, though hitherto in silence—we have
watched her gigantic Brides—her accession of
territory in Italy ; her attempt to debilitate,
and in faft to uCllroy the Germanic body h her
hostile conduct to Switzerland —we can no

Under such circnmftances, should we again
after so short a period of troubles repole, be
