TrIE GARDEN WINDOW.
ft ERE, dm anda, gentle bgndi ng 9
Sweetly pensive, loves to lean.
O'er the groves, her fight extending
Thro* the walks that fisoot between.
Plac'd, far s/he, within this window, 9
Screen'd, / did ant charms survey ,
‘Taught by deceiv'd Olindo,
Nothing's fa/e that looks too gay.
Here, I view, in [often and findings,
Ainrous fiow'r to fow'r incline,
Too remote to mourn their fadings.
When Cy 7 h banging head they pine.
Here, I smell the fragrant breezes ,
Safe from evening s chilly bkifl,
Here the noon-day fan-thine pleases ,
Fearlfs when *twill over c aft.
Hence 1 hear the temfjcf rifir.g,
See the grow greatness fake,
Ev'ry difar.t ill defpiling,
While I ev'ry good partake.
So commanding life’s gay garden,
Let me thornlefs wear the rose ;
Choice like mine let Faffilon pardon,
Tafiing charms, but fhunnmg woes .

Mr. Burke was, in his Juvenile days
wasextremely fond of private acting. A
few of his companions proposed that he
Jhould play Richard the 3d, and having
given him the part at a very short notice
he arofeby times one morning and walk
ed down a lane adjoining his -fiber’s
house, so intent on (ludying his part that
he did not perceive, a fikhy dtcii be
fore, him, and had just uttered with
heroic dignity, “7 bus far we have got into
the bowels of the land f* when he found
himfelf up to the middle in the mire.
Mr. Rutledge, in his late add refs to
his constituents, has very frankly ac
knowledged the wicketlnefs and enor
mity of the meafmes of his own party
during the reign of John Adams :—He
fays, “ It is wonderful that the federal
“ adminif ration Rood its ground so long
it did.” *
