;£xtra<st of a letter from a refpeflable house
i o in Bordeaux, to a gentleman in Boftcn,
{ dated March 26, 1803.
u There has been for a few days past,
serious appearances of an immediate War,
between this country and England. How
che business will terminate is not yet known.
It is however worthy of note, that Bonaparte
oblerved lately to Mr. Livingiton, that if
Inch an event should take place, the peace of
America Ihould not be disturbed on t u e part
of France. This is reported, and I believe
upon good authority.’*
Extras of a letter from a well informed A
mericari at Bordeaux, March 27, to his
friend in Boflon.
<c Appearances, at this moment, ftronglv
indicate, that Europe is again to be plunged
into the horrors of war; and the a6tive pre
parations making bv the government ofGreat-
Britain, induce a belief, that this event is
; alnhoft certain. The points in conrroverfv
between France and Great Britain, can only
be surmised, but it is supposed they relate to
a commercial treaty, and a determination, on
*hr part of the latter, to retain or procure
fb,me port in the Mediterranean, for its ffiips
of war. From the measures adopted, and
park'ing by ooch countries,” the co nmence
f/.ent of hottiliries may speedily be expelled;

** Since ihcfe events, our minister at Paris
is treated ; ih more attention and rclpeft;
this argues well, so fir as it proves that the
govern mem-of France ddires to cultivate the
fiiendfhip-of*the Un ted States, and appreci
ates its corffequcnce in the politipaJ world; it
is ohvioufly for the interest of Great Britain,
to adop similar measures, which it ’s .hoped
will prevent ti e neceflity of our ‘inking with/
either nation, anil thereby iniurc to us th-.
gerat advantages of a neutral commerce.

Leyden, (.-Jollaid) March 18.:
The meflage tTthe king of England was lent to
Paris by extraordinary couriers. This unforefeen
event could hot be followed bv prompt repetitions o*>
the part of the French government. We cannot
know the whole extent of the measures adopted in
eonfeqtien r e ; but we are allured that they have taken
lieps rot Jess vigorous than those aken bv England,
a r id that in case of hoftili'ies. all the ports of the Eu
ropean coast, under trier influence, and which mav
facilitate the mejns of an invafton, would be ‘imme
diately lined with troops.
March 22;
The formidable preparations making in England,!
agpear more and more to awaken the solicitude of fhei
fre rich government, and s he dtfpoiitions are alreacv
made, a; all events, as if war were inevitable. 1:
could hardly have been hoped, under the prefcnt rir
cumtlanrcs, that the fwb belligerent powers wou!<
tolerate th? neutral.tv of the Batavian republic.: bu
and there were the Irnalleff grounds fr uncertainty or
ha‘ all hopes of the kind are now totally va
fiifhed. We that France has demanded p{ the
Ba avian government, that the ne eliary preparations
for the Maintenance ola considerable c rps of Fren h
troops ihall imrnediitely be mdde, which troops afe
said to be already on their march for our frOn iers.—
1 hough this measure be only precautionary, it proves
hovr much the French fcovern e:it, notwithtfan.d
ing the (ilence observed by the journals, a tacjtes im
portance to what palies in England. It was not
p dlible to imagine thar the Firit Cor.ful, after the
highdegrecof glory fcpoWtr which he had acquired,
wiju’d ever yield to menaies. It appears that the
Frerch army deftioed to cover H ;Lud m cdfvof-in
vaiion, and no doubt, also to make a of a genera;
expedition again ft England, will be diftribmed in tbt
principal towns of Holland It is not yet known ;
where the head quarters will be fixed. It is (aid that
general Du cc has set out for Berlin, to require of
taat court <he rood prompt measures with relpecf t

It was yelterdiy currently reported here,
1 ha: the First Coniul returned a very
haughty aidvver to rhe E iglifh; faying he
would give them fitisfaeftion with red-hot
balk! and that in consequence, 20 ; ooo Fiench
troops were to march into this country im
mediately, to line the coasts, for preventing
the Imaiiclt commercial incercourfe between
this country and Great-Britain. It was alf ■
added, that he had de (lined 20 a,OOO men to;
dfefl a landing in England. But in spite o*
ali thde rumours which owe their birrh to the
Hague, there are now less apprehenftons en
tei tamed of W3r than at firft. In fad, the
fi:ft coniul could not embark in an onder
t&King better calculated to visit us with the
last blow* of deftfny ; t or the seas are at pre
fect covered wirhou** treasures, and our ffiips,
many of which are expe&ed to return in
about fix weeks, in case of a rupture, wouicil
fall an easy prey to the Britiffi.
The confidence, however, in continuance
of peace is not strong enough to induce th-:

craft lading any business of the fmallelt im

March 22.
A letter from Paris, of the r6th, states—’
fc wit'in these few day to, orders have been,
.difparched to all pur sea ports; to ha ft eh the’
equipments with all poffibie zeal ; and these:
orders are not alone confined to Ihips of the
line, frigates, and other vtfiels of war, but
extend to the getting in readiness of a consi
derable number of gun-sloops and fiat-bot
:omed boats : the latter are chiefly’fitted out
at Cherbourg and Boulogne. Tne pressing
of mariners and others used to the sea, will be
vigorously carried into efFc<st. From the in
terior .50,000 men will be drafted io march
to the sea coasts; and this number added to
that already there, will form an army of
120,000 men. These military operations,
and o.her cin urrftanccs, give caule of appre
hension, that the peace with England is on
the point of being broken, and which ma)
turn out not a little ailaftrous forbodi nations.
The mi-nifter of the marine received intel
ligence on the 13th, that the English fleet in
che Mediterranean, has been hteiy reinforced
by several Ihips from England and Gibraltar,
which lately pafled the ftreights. This is
considered £s anew proof, that the English
do not intend to evacuate Malta.
