the fubferiber trulls that every per

His privileges have been unufuaiiy

From tke Balance
Perhaps there is not a more
astonishing inflancc of petrifa6tion
in the western world, than is to be
leen about half a mile south east
from the court- houfc in Scoharie
county* And, what is almost as
aftoniftiing, it has never been no
ticed by any geographer or natu
ralist. It is a hill, whose size almost
entitles it to the appellation of a
mountain, which may be pronoun
ced a. mere mass of petrified ftiells.
1 we nt to the top of the hill,
(which is fome thouland feet higher
than the ground where rhe court
house (lands) & examined the rock
as I went up, and then along the
top of the ridge for one half mile.
Ihe rock is generally covered
with a thin foil, but lies bare at
different intervals, not far distant
from each other, in its whole ex
tent ; and in fome places projects
from the ground ten or twelve
fe et. Every inch of the rock ex
niozts petrified ftiells in their per
fect form. In one place, I broke
off a piece of the rock, in a deep
filiure, ten feet from the furface of
the rock, and found it to be of
the fame compoficion. Wherever
the rock is exposed to the fun, it
resembles brimstone i where ic is
hid from the fun, it is dark, coarse
and rough. It (eems to be compo*
ted wholly of river ftiells; I could
find no oyster (hells.•—There is
one tiling particularly worthy of
jetuark. Although it is a ridge
i o elevate, that no water of a pe
trified quality, or otherwise, can
potTibly run there, I saw a bunch of
tnois which a gentleman had found
there, perfectly petrified.
I have no leisure, neither am 1
enough of a naturalist to investigate
and make due reflections upon
this wonderful phenomenon i but,
j hope this communication will ex
cite the curioficy of fome ingenious
oaturaltft to do jufticc to the sub-
PUER.
