Bv A Picket, Teacher.
Among the multitude of spelling books, i
which are yearly issuing from the prel’t, none
differ essentially from those publiilied before;
ands those now in use, any one frems e
qually good, as they are all exaft y, or very
nearly on the fame plan. But a fpelh .ig book
ough’ to inftnnfl children not merely how to
read, but to read with propriety ; lid for thus
pnrjtofe fliould contain an accurate ffandard
of pronunciation ealily comprehended by the
learner. A flandard ol pronunciation feme
of them do pretend to, but is found only in
the title page or is so far from being ens that
it is not intelligible. Mr. Picket, from long
experience as a teacher, felt and endeavored
toremedy these defects. By adopting Wat-;
kcr’s key, and clailiiig together those words
in which the vowel, are Itmilarly pronounced,
he has heen able to point out the true pronun
ciation with ease and accuracy. Bt feledting
the easiest lessons from Mavor and Hurray, lie
has made I,* a reading hook for those who

ment of the spelling part he has altered, as
everv fpclling-b ok now in use having the
words of fnnilar length and termination clns.
sed togtther, uniformly leads to difguning
monotony in the learner. Every one who

nunciation by Walker and Sheridan, and has
felt the dificulty v/iihi which long acquired ha

convinced that such a p an mull be of cflen
