To the Editor of the Mercantile Advertiser.
Sir.,
Ttiis is not an improper time to ob-
I serve that {lores called fire proof, are not
fafe depots of property in cases of great
danger. A thin covering of iron over
doors and window {butters may prevent
i eombuftion from flukes of fire or any.
! thing carried through the air Lorn burn
jing at a distance, but when there is only
i a narrow ft reet, or perhaps not so much,
j between a building so protefied and a.i
j oilier on fire, the hazard is not so much
jltfa than where the wood is exposed. E
very one knows that wood will, when
.mud; heated, take fire nearly as loon be
tiirid a thin plate of iron as otherwise ;
jm:ke. confiJeiable progrtfs in burning
j before it c:be perceived ; and then the 1
iiron prevents the fpcedy application of
Jwater. I would recommend, not as a
difeovery of my own, but as a thing not
j gen -rally known, a method which 1 have
joften ften luccel fully used, of rendering
wood incombustible, viz soaking it in
a llrong solution of alum, tii! it be tho
jrougtily penetrated with the saline parti
'cles. ‘ if the wood can be immersed in a
I hot f'dulijn, so much the better. Tin
is not, ii nvever, material as keeping u
(longer in soak answers the fame purpose.
I I have seen wood thus prepared, re
| main for years without being burnt, in
situations where it was impolfibie to
| have used unprepared wood. Work
imtn object to work wood after it has
been soaked, becau r e it injures then
tools. ibis objection may be over
cume by having the work nearly fi. I
nilhed before imrrcrfion. U.
