Georgia Republican & State Intelligencer. foLvutz Ilf; No* 69, Six Dollars a Year, hail m Advance. imnr-.TOmaner* From tbs Moral andSeni'une'ital Magazine 0/1793. Description of a famous Fountain, on tht top of a Mountain in Cey lon, In your kft- Magaz’ne you de fied a farther scccu..t of the fpringson the fiunmit of a moun tain in the 10 ind of Ceylon, which I mentioned in an anony m-jus letter on feeing the query ir, your Magazine, which Mr. Miles has answered in your lift, I 111 II very readily give you all the fatisfitclion in my power re lating to th's famous spring nor fhali 1 deviate one tittle from the tiuth, however repugnant it may appear to any favorite hy pothesis. During my youth I was ma ny years in the Dutch ferv>ce, and made ieveral voyages in the company*'s ships to the East-In dies. It was in one of thele that I observed the natural phenome non which give ocoafion to this, and my former letter. I had often heard of a famous moun tain in the (Band of Ceylon, cal led by the inhabitants Hatnalel, cr the mountain of Adam, from the pretension that the firft man was created there ; and bting desirous of viewing this rema li able mountain thee of us deter mined ro undertake the j lurney. Itftauds in the fouthein part of the Iflind, abouc twen;y leagues from the sea, in the mid dle of a larg • plain. The afeenr is gradual ana easy, the ground covered with beautiful turf, and interspersed with trees and dow ering ftirubs, exhibiting the molt beauti.'ul appearance, and per fuming the air with their fpiev odours. But we hid not afccn ded far in this agreeable manner, before the beautiful verdue was exchanged for fragments of rocks, and the agreeable (lope, into fb deep a direction, that it would be aim At impoifibie to reach the fu ii nii, were it no; for i_n iron chain whicn s fattened at the top ot the mountain, reaches to the basts of this rockly precipice. It was placed there on, a relig ous account, the inhabitants of th” 1(1 ..id tlteemipg the mountain sacred, and 01 that account often make pilgrimages to it. Aher clmi&.ng ch.s diffi. uji afeent which is about an EngliM miic, we reacned the fu.rr.nit o th.s la.nous mountain, which is a plain of a circular form, about 400 yards in diameter ; and near Me een re or this plain is the fa mous spring mentioned in my former letter. it Lan oval h gure, and its longelt diam ter .s aaour. 6u yards. Tne water is deep, and 1 think the bed 1 ever tail'd} out perhaps the heat and fatigue we had lurfcred in climb ing ihe rockly afeent might ren der its talte particularly pleasing,” * Tnis mountain .is the larged ft? The whole KlanJ, fy high that seamen difeover it at near twenty league* dAtance. -Itmuft, however, be observed, th*i*the top (at lealt it was so when wc 1 were there) is bdow the j clouds, guide, indeed/ fnformed'us that in violent ftormsthe clouds ■were below the fummir, and fcc med to dash with great for/ a gainst the fuE of the mountains. He adifed, that its heads w*s of ten (hrouded in mist or vapors. Such, I assure you, is the (itui tion of this* famo*J3 fpring*— Whether the common hypotke fis will account fur the origin of its waters, 1 (ball not pretend to determine. 1 Hbve faithfully re lated the sass found it; (hall only ado, ti.*tthc ftrea:s whi'h low from the spring, are perpe tual, and furnilh several parts of the I (land with water. Perhaps few places in the world afford a more delightfu profpeft that the t p of this mountain. To the feuth tht fight is bounded by the ocean, which seems to touch the sky ;■ r an amazing distance—and to th northward by a chain of hills which run acrois the Klind.— T. e intermediate fpffce is fineh deverfined with eminence, va! leys, plains, and dreams of watet The beautiful groves and forclls, filled with a great variety of ro mamic trees, and multitudes of them covered with flowers, form iuch a cuntiaft in the color of .he l nlcape, and exhibit such a varie.y of lhapes, that imagina tion itfelf is at a loss to paint: and were this country like our own, oldled with the sweets of liberty, and enlightened with the glorious rays of the gospel, it •■ight vie with any part of the world.—But this is far frond be ing the cap*. Governed by tne iron rod of the mod drfpo tic tyrant, who ufurpsao abfolutc power over their pofifdlions, their actions and their lives, and a cue fame time plunged in the height of ignorance, and (laves to the oiind luperditions of a bar barous idolatry 5 they pass their lives in anxiety and terror, and seem ft ran gets to the bkfllags which providence had Gartered found them with a librral hand. They had formerly fume faint glimmerings of the true origin >f things; for they (till call thv. above precipice Adam’s moun tain, as I have already observed ; they are a’fo of op njon that the lake on the top of it had hs origin from the tears which Eve !hed at the death of Abel, and coat Ceylon was the terrdUai parudife. 1 ftvndd h?ve menti oned, that near the lake is ala: ge done, on which is the print of a mar/s foot, about twenty in ches in length, and seven and a hall in bredth, and (till very per ielt. 1h s they arc pnfuaded s a vest age of the firft m in, and that this plain was the place he let apart for worshipping his Creator.
