CF THE
Young Savage of Aveyron.
A CHILD, about eleven or
twelve yea s cf aye, who had
been seen fome time before in
the woods of Ciune, in France,
looking after acorns and roots,
upon which he subsisted, was
n.t:: in the fame place, towards
the <'!ofe of tnc year 1798, by
three sportsmen, who fc:zed up
on hin at r!ie inflant he was
climbing a tree to pervade their
purfuir. They conducted him
to a neighbouring village, and
|ut him under the care of an a
ged rnarr 0 ; from whom, how
ever, before the end of a week,
lie contrived to escape, and fled
to the mountains, where he wan
dered about during the feverir,
of a molt rigorous winter, clad
only in a tattered (hire. At night
he retired into solitary places,
approaching, as the day advan
ced, the neighbouring villages ;
and in this manner he pafled a
vagrant kind of life, tbl the rime
in which, of his own accord, he
fought refuge in a dwelling houft
in the Canton of St. Sernin.
Here he was retained and tak n
care of for two or three days,
and from thence was lent to the
hospital of Sr. Alrique, after
wards to Rhodez, where he was
kept for several months. Du
ring his abode in these different
places, he appeared to be always
equally wild, impatient of res
traint, and capricious in his tem
per, continually endeavouring to
} et away, affording materials for
the moft interesting observations,
which were collected by a perfoi
worthy of the utmott credit, and
which I shall not fail to relate in
those parts of the following es
fay where they may be molt ad
vantageously introduced. A
clergyman, dillinguifheJ as a
patron of science and general li
terature, conceiving that, from
this event, fome new light might
be thrown on the moral fcienct
of man, obtained permission for
the child to be brought to l a
ris. He arrived there about the
end of the year 17 99> thr
care of a poor but reipectable ok
man, who, being obliged toleav;
him soon after, promised to re
turn, and be a father to him, if,
at 3ny time, he ill iuld be aban
doned by society.
The moft brilliant but unrea
sonable expe&ations were form
ed by the people of l J aris res
pecting the Savage of Aveyron,
before he arrived. Many curi
ous people anticipated great
pleafore in beholding * what
would be his allonifhment at the
light of ail the fine tilings in the
capital. On the other hand,
many persons eminent for their
juperior understanding, forget
ting that our organs are lei- flex
ible, and imitation more difficult,
in proportion as man is removed
from society, and the period of
Ins infancy, thought that the e
ducation of this individual would
be the bufintls of only a few
months, and that they fhoulJ ve
ry soon hear him make the moft
lti iking olifervatio. s conccrnin :
his pall manner of life. Instead
of this, what did they lee ? —*
dingulfing, llovenly boy, alivfted
with fpafmodio, and frequently
with convulßve motions, conti
nuaby balancing himfelf like
fome of t e animals in the mcna
gcrie, bitinp and icracching those
who contradicted him, expreHin :
no kind of afiV&ion for those
who attended upon him ; and,
in short, indifferent to every bo
dy, aid paying no regard to a*
ny thing.
It n v be eafiiv imagined
that a 0.-nig of this nature would
excite only a mouicnury curi
ofit /. i’enplc ca-ue together in
crowds ; they Uw hi n, without
pmpaly observing him ; they
pa’.Ted their judgment: on him,
without knowing him •, and
f. cke no more on the lubje<ft.
In t!ie midst of this general indif
tei ence, the administrators of the
ttitior.al infticutt for the dear and
dumb, arid its celebrated dir*£lof, 1
lid not forger, that focittv, in
drawing to herfelf the unfo-tu*
nate youth, nad contradled to
wards him indispensable obliga
tions which ffie was bound to
fulfil. Entering, then, into the
hopes which 1 had conceived
from a course of medical treat
ment, they determined that he
Ihotild be entrusted to my care
Obliged to return to fads al
ready known, I shall unfold
them in few words ; and, that I
may not labour under the fulpi

with a view of enhanfiMg the im

o a leaned society, co which 1
had the honor of being admitted.
B ginning with an account of
tike fenlodal functions of the
tom.: savage, Citizen Pinel re
prefemed to t:s his fenfts as in
iuch a state of inertia, that th's
unfortunate youth was found,
a cording to his report, verv in
ferior 10 fome of cur domestic
animals. His eyes were with
out steadiness, without expres
sion, wandering from one object
to another, without fixing upon
any thing ; so little inrtru&ed in
other refpcdls, and so little expe
rienced in tire sense of touch,
that hr was unable to distinguish
between an object in relief and a
painting : the organ of hearing
was alike inlenfible to the loud
est nodes and to the muff char
ming mulic ; that of the v ice
vas Itiil more imperfect, utteiing
nly a guttural and uniform

tttle cultivated, that he feeir e j

adour of the fined perfumes, and
0 the moft feud exhalations;
anally, the knfe of feeling was
imited to those mechanical
unilions which arose from the
dread of objects which might be
n his way.
Pioceeding to the state cf the
intellectual faculties of this child,
he author of the report exhibit
ed him to us as incapable of at
'ention (unless as it relpeiled the
objedsjof his wants,) and conic
quer.tly of a l l the operations or

it; destitute of memory, ol
judgment, even of a difpoli ion
to imitation ; and lo bounded
were his ideas, even those which
related to his immediate wants,
that he could not open a door,
nor get on a chair to obtain the
food which was put out of the
reach of his hand ; in short,
destitute of every mean of com
munication, attaching neither
expreflion nor intention to the
gestures and motions of his bo
dy, palling with rapidity, and
without anv apparent motive,
from a state of profound melan
choly, to bursts of tae moft im
moderate laughter i inferfible
to every speck sol moral affec
tion, his difcermr.ent was never
excited but by the fti r.ulus of
gluttony ; his plcafure, an agree
able ienfation of the organs of
tafle j his intelligence, a fufeep

ideas, connected with his physi
cal wants ; in a word, his whole
existence was a life purely ani

more analogous to the inode of
