THE LIFE OF A MOTOR CAR.
How long should an auto last?
That is the question and the experts
always begin answering in chorus:
“That depends.’’ Depends on what?
Some people die young, through be
lief in “a short life but a merry one.”
Joy-riding and standing out in the
rain are not so healthy for a car as
regular hours and a good garage.
On the other hand, the utility of the
car may be more important than its
longevity.
Deterioration [in ithe ear occurs
most rapidly at points where there
is friction and vibration. These are
prevalent in varying degrees all over
the car, but modern designing makes
it comparatively easy to remedy them

at points where they are most acute.
First and foremost, the elixir of
life to a car is a plentiful supply of
clean high grade oil, not only to the
engine itself, whatever be its lubri
cation system, but to every part
where friction is possible. The ne
cessity of wise and methodical lu
brication has been noted before in
these pages and some of its difficult
ies in minor points emphasized.
The longevity of a car depends to
a great extent on wise and timely
replacements.—Robert Sloss in Jan

MARION HARLAND, FOURSCORE
AND BUSY.
“I was born on the shortest day
of the year,” said Marion Harland
on her eightieth birthday last week,
“and I’ve been trying to catch up
ever since.” She added that culti
vating her sense of humor was re
sponsible for her many years and
good health. Her most recent lit
erary work, “Marion Harland’s Au
tobiography ” was published only a
few months ago and is a thick vol
ume of historic and personal narra
tive which has much of the author’s
personality. In speaking of the
book, Marion Harland pointed out
one unique feature of her career:
“The idea of reviewing my life upon
paper first came to me with the con
sciousness—which was almost a
shock—that of the authors still on
active professional duty in our coun

runs back to the stage of our nation
al history that preceded Civil War
by a quarter of a century. I alone
am left to tell of my own knowledge
and experience what the old South
was in deed and truth.”
