A SAD, TRUE STORY.
Dear Brotherhood: Will you listen patiently
while 1 tell you a little story, sad, but too true.
To begin: Only a few years ago, a stout healthy
young man fell in love with and married one of
Douglas county’s most beautiful young girls,
neither of them possessing much of this world’s
goods, but feeling immensely rich in each other’s
possession. They went to work, and for several
years prospered, until they almost owned a home.
In the meantime, several bright little children
came to bless them; but, alas! about two years
ago, that dreadful disease, rheumatism, came like
a thief in the night to strike the husband and
father down, to stop him from work, to take from
him the sweet hope of success, so nearly at
tained by him and his life partner in the field
of honest toil; to say nothing of sleepless, pain
racked nights, the agony of which no pen can
paint, and no one can fully realize, except those
who have experienced it. The result is that doc
tor’s bills, medicines, and the high cost of living,
combined, have exhausted the resources of this
young couple, whose start on life’s journey was so
bright and full of promise; and, while they are

The Sunny South Brotherhood
========================= By DADD Y JIM
THE JEFFERSONIAN
not suing to charity for help, I know they are in
need of assistance and will heartily appreciate
anything you may care to send them. Now, my
friends, when you read thees lines, remember
that the same misfortune can and may come
upon you. Do something for your orother in
distress, and, take my word for it, he is worthy
in every way of your help, confidence and trust;
and the wife—she deserves a gold medal for her
untiring devotion. She is my ideal of a heroine
in real life. The neighbors have been kind and
helpful in many things, and here’s hoping that
they will not grow indifferent, as people so often
do, when weeks lengthen into months, and
months into years. The name of the gentleman
is Mr. C. R. Williams, R. F. D. 1, Winston, Ga.
Hoping my efforts will result well for this de
serving couple, I now leave them in your hands —
the best hands, I believe, in the world. —Your
brother, JOHN H. KEATON, R. F. D. 2, Winston,
Ga.
(Mr. Keaton has written with such deep feeling
that I can add nothing to strengthen his pathetic
appeal. We can all help a little; at least with
words of sympathy, if nothing more.—DADDY
JIM.)
WE OUGHT TO HELP.
Dear Daddy Jim: lam a little girl nine years

ma, and 25 cents from grandma Burrage, to go

WALDINE JACKSON, Preston, Miss.
MANY FRIENDS RESPONDED.
Please allow me to thank you and the many
friends who so nobly responded to the call for
New Year’s cards and sunshiney letters to Clinton
Hines. The letters and cards have come from so
many friends that we feel deeply indebted to you
and to all who have written. We received seven
cards yesterday. We are receiving a feast of
good wishes and many expressions >of regret
that the boy is so afflicted. The paper contain
ing Hines’ picture will be preserved by many of
Mr. Watson’s friends. Surely the unfortunate
have a friend as close as the brother. —J. S.
