BOSTON. Dec. 25.
Arrived yesterday, .the Portuguese ship
Met rianne- fa lor a, Capt. Ventßr.y Avy
cleto de Biurro. She was from Bahia
for Lisbon, and captured by th?r U. S. sclir.
• Alligator , Lieut. Stockton, and ordered
for tnis port, under the command of Lieut.
Armor. Sin* came into port with the same
pendant flying; and displayed in the same
manner, as when she attacked the Aliga

Commodore John Shaw, commanding Naval
Officer, in Boston, dated,
Boston Harbor, Dec. 24,1821.
“I have the honor to report to you my
arrival at this place, with the armed ship
Marianna Faluro, having on board all her
ciew as prisoners—29 in number.
“This vessel attacked the Aligator, on!
the sth Novetaherpn lat. about 20, 38 N.‘
long, 30 W. in a most outrageous and pi-1
ratical manner; but was foiled in her at-!
i tempts to capture her, and after an action!
of about an hour and a halt surrendered to!
the Aligator. j
“She is a ship of between 300 and 400*
totts; mounted four long 12-ponnders, two
long 6-poundcrs, and tour 24-pound tar
ronades; four of which 1 was under the ne
cessity of throwing overboard in a very
j heavy gale, of wind, in the gulf stream, on
! the 6th inst. in which gale we lost some of
! our spars, and had our stern boat washed
javvay.
“The prize tiewconsists of 16, including
j myself and two officers, Midshipman Geo.
S. Blake, and Mr. J. Dixon, master’s Mate;
and it gives me pleasure to acknowledge
their uniform, vigilant and correct conduct,
and that they rendered me every possible
aid,
“I will take the liberty to add, that the
reason of the great lengtii us the action, was
in consequence of the long guns of the
pri7.“, and Capt, Stockton’s desire to get
along side before he commenced 1 (the wind
being light) gave her the light to herself for
more than one hour.”
We yesterday received a letter from Lt.
Abbot, in which lie fumi.die* some of the
details of the capture, not usually given in
official letters. The following are ex
tracts:—
“On the sth of Nov. in the lat. of about
20, 38, N. and •* ng. 20 W. at 9 A. JW.
standing on our course to the S. and E. we
discovered a vessel on our larboard bow.—
Some time after, we perceived she had ta
ken in top gallant sails, hauled up her cour
ses arid hove to, and that she had a flag
hoisted half mast, which we supposed to
be a national flag in a whiff, a siga.d of dis
tress. ‘We immediately hauled up and
stood for her, with the expectation of relie
ving some .worthy distressed sailor. A-
Oout 11 SO we discovered her to be- a ship
■ bearing appearance of a frigate or sloop of
var, and that her color hoisted was a small
blur flag. Soon after we were not a little
surprised at being greeted with a shot, and
could not but at first think it was an acci
dent. Our large American ensign ami
Pendant were immediately hoisted. AVe
were very soon undeceived however, end
could not mistake her character and inten
ion for she opened a raking fire upon us
with round and grape, utterly disregarding
our ctdours, and having none other herself
than the above mentioned blue Hag.
“You may be assured our commander,
ever ready to relieve the distressed, to
fight an enemy, oi maintain the honor of
his country’s Hag, was not unprepared at
this time, with his little schooner for either
Finding our guns shot ter and lighter than
our antagonist’s as our shot vvouitl not
reach, our commander determined to lose
not a moment in closing with her, ami if
possible to board, which from the winds
being light, exposed us to her raking fire, a
long time be fire we could return it.
f< At 1, 30 having received her fire, for
more than one hour, ar.d fimltngall attemnts
to dissuade her from further hostilities were
unavailing, anti having arrived within mus
ket shot, we returned her fire.—At 1,40
she hoisted the Portuguese ensign, and con
tinued her hostilities as she had done be
fore under her blue (lag. At 1,50 she sur
rendered, having sustained some damage
in her sail* and rigging.
“She proved to be an armed'ship between i
three and four hundred torts, called Mari
anne Faloru, (commanded by capt. Ventu
ra Anacleto tie lfiitto) mounting four long |
I2’s, two long 6’s and four 24 pound car- ,
roitades. She is pierced for 16, and frhm
the construction of tiie ship’s quarters and r
her stern ports, has the capability to fighr
9 on aside.
I “From circumstances which have come
under my own observation, and what I have
• learnt from the piisoners, the raptain of
■j the prize, appears to have been for a num
-1 her of years captain of a guinea-man in the
slave trade. ’The crew are said to have
observed that they had had plenty of lights
’ j helore; but that at this time, they told the
j captain, it would be no good tight for them,
I for they knew, by our looks, vve were an A
i mericau man of warj arid that his orders,
were to fight us, let us tv; what we would.”
A letter from Midshipman Barney, of the
Aligator, dated at sea, Nov. 6, 1821, says,
“We have had. until within a few days, a
succession of violent weather; the most
tearful of Which was a dreadful whirlwind,
Accompanied by a w a*ev-spout, which for.
nred and ascended to the Heavens, with
great rapidity, broke and passed very near
bur sterp. from the rapidity of its pro-
gross , it is difficult to say \yiat would have :
bpen the consequences to us had we been
in its path. Yesterday we discovered a
vessel ahead of us; she hove to, and hoisted
a signal of distress. We, of course, made
every exertion to come up to her assistance.
After coming within gan shot, she lied at
us with grape and round shot. We imme
diately hoisted our colors, and after using
every exertion to make her desist firing, we
commenced filing, captuied, and took pos
session ofher.”
Other reported particulars of this cap
ture are, that sire was bound from Bal ia
Lisbon; —that she has a cargo of sugar, can
|on, hides, plank, ike.; that she liar unques
tionably been in the slave trade; and that
it is expected sire lias specie on board.
More Pirates taken. — We are gratified
to learn that the Br itish, men of war in die
West Indies are at last following the lau
dable example set them by the cruizers of j
the United Slates.—Capt. M’Lellan, < I
the ship Liverpool, arrived here yesterday
from Turks fsiuntl, and informs ns that on
I the 23tf nit. H. li. M. sclir. Speedwell,

I Passage, a piratical schooner, and brought
j her into that port. Tiie same day, a British
man of war brig arrived (here, having on
i board, in iron-, fifty piratical privateers
men, which she had taken a shor t time
previous, on board an armed vessel in the
vicinity of Santa Martha.—Another man
rtf war brig had passed through tire Passage
about a week previous, with a number of
these buccaneers—both ve>*e!s being on
their way to Jamaica with tire prisoners.
