THURSDAY MORXUXG, Jan. 17, 1522.
On Saturday last, Mr. War. C. Mins was elect*
J Captain of the Ist company Ist regimertt
leorgia Militia.
The House of Representatives lias been {
,ii- the last two days occupied with a dis-j
ussion wliich, at a later period of the ses-i
ion, would not have been suffered tooccu-’
y so much ot its attention—namely, the;
ranting partial appropriations for tncser-|
icestif the War Department for the cur
ed year, but particularly for that branch
fit which has relation to Indian. Affairs,
’lie objection to this appropriation is, that
s objects are not sufficiently defined. A
art of the difficulty, however, appears to
rise from the omission to draw the distiuc
iun between the expenses of the system of
udian trade, and those expenses which
re incidental to our semi-diplomattc in
ercourse with the Indian tribes, the extent
if which cannot so well tje anticipated as
o be fixed by law, but must vary with the
arcumslances of our relations with those
ribes. A lit; le variation of the phraseol
igy of the bill, to which there need to have
keen no objection, we believe,, would have
Ibviated every difficulty which has been
rnposed to it. Tltv discussion, however,
an do no harm. An honest administration
an have nothing to apprehend from the
:losest scrutiny of its conduct, which will
le more approved the more it is ihvestiga-
Intelligencer, sth in si.
We already perceive, that several sub
ecU are about to occupy the serious alten
ion of Congress, which we had not count
d upon among the attractions of the pre
;ent session. j
A bill was yesterday reported by the
ommittee on the subject of the Militia,!
I’liich embraces some propositions of rath*!
ran original character; and as it is possi
ile it may not be destined, like its prede
essors for fifteen or twenty years past, to
ie on the table, or slumber in the bosom of
committee of the whole until forgotton by
he mere lapse of time, we think it proper
n give our readers a general notice of its
•revisions.
It is proposed, then, that all the com
nissiemed and non-commissioned officers,
bove the rank of corporal, in each brigade
a she U. States, shall each year be assem
iled together and encamped, within the
itniis of each brigade, for a certain nutn
er of days, under the command of the
fficers commanding brigades respectively;
t> receive pay, and allowance fur travel
ing, and to be governed by the rules which
re prescribed fur the government of the
irmyand Militia of the U. States, and to
e subjected to the discipline, ike. prescri
ed by the same authority. Privates in
ie Militia are to be exempted from doing
oy militia duty, on paying from ten to
ve dollars yearly and every year, to sucli
!rsnn as the State Legislature shall pre
.ribe—the money thus paid to be applied
iclusivafy to disbursements under this
:t.
We are not disposed to find fault with
e basis us this bill, which we shall pub
sh at large; but there appear to us to be
>mc difficulties in the detail, wliich can
nt be obviated but by considerable a

During last weeic, the peo
ple of St,
Louis witnessed the no less un
cttinmon than gratifying sight of several
ffit-bottomed boats, laden with produce
from the country high up oq the Missouri,
descending the Mississippi, destined for
New Orleans. These boats compose the
van Jilt /much greater number, that are on
their way ’ down from Jloonsliclc settle
ment. The fertile and extensive distiict
jof country,’ up the .Mississippi, called the
; Salt River settlements, is also making con
jsiderable shipments, particularly of To
| bacco, which is found to be exceedingly
j well adaptflfcto that soil. In some instan
ces, where The neighborhood was small,
the farmers have made a common stock pf
their crops, and shipped them in partner
ship, entrusting the proceeds of their labor
to some two or three of the must experien

Indian .Murder.—Just as our paper was
going to pivss, a gentleman arrived here
from the Mississippi, who informs us that
a most horrid and unprovoked murder was
committed about lire last of October, in the
new purchase in the Choctaw nation, on a
party of the United States’ Surve-.org, con
sisting of ten persons— only one of whom
escaped. The murder was committed on
the lower line, ami about 150 miles from
Fort Hibson—by Choctaw Indians. The
quarrel, we understand, originated in con
sequence of some trivial affair. Our infor
mant received the above information from
Col. Nichols, who passed up the Mississip
pi a few days since, on his way to the Cnj
casaw Biuif-i, with the Chicasaw annuity.

Daring attempt. —On Saturday evening |
a gentleman passing through Bowdoin-!

was, and upon kjs answering that it had
;jest struck 8^ the man insisted that lie
I should look at ui watch, as he wished to
know the time precisely. This the gentle-
man refused, and attempting to paa*, thr
fellow seized him by the collar, and prc-;
seating a pistol to his breast, demanded
his watch of him. ensued, in the
course of which, the gentleman struck it
the fellow with a sword cane which he had
in his hand, and passing through the folds
of his great coat, it broke off. The fellow
.then aimed a blow at him with the but end
of his pistol, which the gentleman parried,
and succeeded in making his escape.
This is not the first instance of an as
sault in our public streets at an early hour
in the evening, and it shows a degree of
desperate huidihood which demands a
more vigilant attention of the Police.

“I have the satisfaction ofstating to vou>
that we have obtained a very respectable
list of signatures, ut the Salem merchants,
to the Memorial fora National Bankrupt
Law, which will be forwarded on Monday
without fail. We estimate the property
represented by the signatures we have ob
tained, including a ferv in Marblehead and
Danvers, at between seven and eight mil
lions of dollars. Very few active merch
ants have declined to sign it. and it is high
ly pleasing to observe, how many respecta

expediency of the measures within a few

the fnnt being crossed, the captain put
himself to a great expense and considera
bly prolonged his voyage to accomplish die
order in the sense lie gave it. “Where
have you been so long!*” said the anxious
owner, on his return. “Looking for your—
monkeys,” said the enraged captain, “and
with all my pains, 1 have been able to gel
but sixty out of the 100.” “Sixty vwn-

wanted two.” “Here is your order for
them, sir,” replied the captain, coolly pull
