Literary Intelligence.— We understand
that the Editor of the Port Folio intends
to resume the monthly form of publication,
and that during the pr esent year it will be
embellished with a splendid illustiation oi
one of the VVaverly Novels, engraved by
M ‘.Kearney. Portraits of all the Presi
dents of the U. States, engraved on steel
by Mr. Murray, &co In consequence of
the discontinuance of the Literary Ga'zetti,
this is the only .American Magazine pub
lislied in Philadelphia, and we hope it will
receive an encouragement adequate to the
liberal exertions by which it is supported.
While numerous competitors for public
favour have been stranded and forgotten,
mi Port Folio continues to sari down
the stream of time, freighted with the
stores of learning and imagination. We
are so ry, however, to learn, that owing to
the indifference with which our literary
productions ate regarded, die proprietor
are but poorly rewarded, whil. works of
English origin and far inferior in value are
warmly cherished.
Culture of Cotton in Connecticut. —The
Norwalk Gazette of the 9th inst. says, “ Un
the Ist inst. we were presented with a sam
ple of Cotton which was raised in he gar
den of Mr. Lewis L Nash, of Ridgefield,
the last year. The seeds were planted a
bout the middle of May, and with no more
than the ordinary ca>e of garden vegeta
bles, the Cwttou was ripe by the 20th ol Oc
tober. The sample which we have receiv
ed is as fine a9 any Cott.m u r e ever saw.
A small skein of thread, spun from die
same, accompanied it. If Cots m can be
raised in this pai tof the country with so
little trouble, we know no reason why ii
would not be well worth the attention of
the public !”
Valuable Discovery. —There has recent
tly been discovered, on Memphretnagog
Luke, near the northern bnuudaty of Ver
mont, an inexhaustable quarry of the rea l
Oil Stone, of an excellent quality; and a
company is formed, and have erected ma
chinery for manufacturing diem. Ti-,\

to be equal, if not superior, to the best Tur

MISSOURI.
A HINT TO EMIGRANTS.
Extract of a letter from a gentleman in
Missouri to liis friend in Virginia.
“I have a thousand times iegrct eh, that
f did nut take your advice : for Ive ily be
lieve the climate is even colder tliau you
described it. I shall always protest a
gaiust this state being styled a “ Western”
state, because it is in fact more allied by
its severe cold to the northern states, el
even Canada, ihan the mild and temperate
climates bordering on the Ohio.
“For six months my blacks wee unable
to do any thing more than feed die cattle,
and draw fire wood sufficient to keep them
from freezing: ami a great part of the
time, theif teeth chattered so much, that
they seemed to speak with difficulty. Os
all climates, this is the last, that a man
possessed of slaves should think of emigra
ting to.
“I thank God I have sold out, though
at heavy loss, and lo pe soon to remove to
a more genial climate.”
Shipwreck. —A Spanish schr. from Bal
timore . was stranded on Thur-day nigh*
last week,-ut the upper end of Kent Ist
and, a'otl was full of water on her beam
ends. The crew weteall frost bitten; the
captain and five of them had taken the
boat and started for Rnckhall, and had not
since been heard of. Three Spaniards and
a black man were taken from the wreck
on Saturday, and several of the crew werp
on Kent Island. JV, I'.Adv.
Double Roguery. —A Boston paper
states that there was I’ouml upon the per
son who presented the altered check to the
Branch Bank in that town, a memorandum
book, with a multiplication bv gl4 60,
which is nearly the standard weight of
doubloons by the United States law, and
the sum multiplied nearly amounted to the
number of doubloons stolen from the steam
boat Connecticut some time since which led
to the suspicion that the draft was obtained
by that specie.
Another Mail Robbery■ —The way mail
between Neo -York anti Philadelphia, was
stolen from behind the mail coach, on the
night of the 9th inst. and every letter con
tained in the portmanteau broken ojien.—
The fragments of letters were found in a
field about a mile from Princeton, N. 3.
and were sent to the postmaster of this ci
ty. They have been carefully collected
and transmitted to their original places of
destination, so far as they could
tained.
Nothing of value has escaped the hands
of the robber, except two promissory notes,
amounting to nearly 1,400 dollars. One
hundred dollars reward is offered for the
appiehension & conviction of the offender.
