■THE MUSEUM.
FOITTHE MUSEUM,
Written (it the Grave of a Friend.
• While my soul revel’d in its matchless bliss,
1 reck’d not of a misery like this—
To bend me o’er thy cold sepulchural stone
Ac t mourn—ha! Mary! Mary! ait thou pone
For ever i Yes, thy grave—thy speaking grave
Tells n.e, nor youth nor innocence could siive
Thee from the lot of all.-Deat h’s withering blight
Hath glv’n thee early slumbers, love—good night!
Swcetbe thy dreams, and undisturb’clthy rest:
Unlike the flattering day-dream of my breast,
That bade me while I wandered by thy side
Call Utee my present hope—my future pride—
ShoW’d tne thro’ vista of the days to be,
On earth, a fancied immortality
Os joyous love—and happiness with thee.
That dream was rudely broken ; —like to his
Who slumbering, walks o’er fancied meads of
bliss—.
Wliile In reality, his steps he takes
High on the giddy steep —lie wakes lie wakes
W arn’d into sense by fancy’s cheating fire—
W’akes—but to fall—and falling—to expire !
Sweet be thy dreams!—and is it then a dream ?
If so, w hence comes that pure and hcav’nly beam
That lights the sold when darken’d and distrest,
And promises a something mote than rest ?
Thou hast awoke—for earth and its every’ pain
Chang’d for a heav’n—where we may meet again.
They bid the cease to mourn—ah ! did they’ know
The hopeless— deep intensity of wo
That preysupou nty heart—the palsying grief
That shakes my spirit—and repels relief,—
They’d cease to chide, and wonder that the soul
Could beat- a grief that mocks at its controul.
They little know the treasure I have lost,
Ner what th’ unwilling sacrifice hath cost,—
They little think of that, ecstatic hour
When thou, my Mary* own’d love’smagic p**'v’r-
I would not give that hour of perfect bliss
To loose the—worse tlutn agony rtf this.
Still let them chide I’ve not a joy to mar,
Nor one to hope for—intellectual war
Hath wasted every hope—aiul clad in gloom
All earthly prospects—but ‘hat of the tomb :
The tomb!—o! still be reason 1 ft to bless
The hour that gives me to its loneliness.
Mary more—no longer may I dwell
W ith all that’s left on qgjth—ihy mouldering
urn farewell! YORICK.
