ga&annat> : 1 Thursday morjwto, Jan. %, 1822. £*-’ • ‘ \ correspondent of ours asks, somewhat sarcc.s iicaUy— u the reason why all the printers in this country are loud in favor of laws for aboj ishing imprisonment for debt?” This is what the logicians of onr day would call a crammer— knocking us down with a conclusion, before wc have an opportunity of establishing our premises. COMJICXICATIOX. THEATRICAL. On account of the weather, the performances at the Theatre announced for last evening, were postponed, and will take place this evening.— The public will recollect that they are tor the benefit of Mrs. Gilfert —a lady of established reputation, both on the stage and oil’ of it. In the higher walks of tragedy, Mrs. Gilfert stands decidedly alone —she is without competition and without a rival. Theatrical puffs have become so common, and are so little attended to, that we deem of trifling importance whatever may be said in the papers just previous to a benefit night’ Yet on that account we would not omit giving merit her due, and paying a just compliment to c salted worth. >- One of the counterfeiters named Calvin, who was recommitted after breaking jail, gave in the fallowing confession: “The iron bar of die win dow was cut with a watch spring saw, which was in the possession of Howell before he went to jail. The auger and chissel werp received from an acquaintance of Howell’s, by a cord from the window,'the night of the escape. The saw had been applied for two days to the window bar, and in the morning the crevices were closed with lalloxv and charcoal. It was about 11 or T 2 o’clk. when they passed the grates, and taking a west ern course, came to the pond on the South Com mon—where a consultation was held as to their future direction. Concluded to take a boat and cross the rivsr; but not succeeding in this, they returned and passed the bun iug-gvound—saw several persons returning from the theatre ; to prevent suspicion, threw their bundles of clothes into the burying-ground. They intended to take the Augusta road, but getting lost in the swamp, they wandered about until Tuesday af ternoon, when meeting a negro in the woods were told that they were but three miles from Savannah. They soon after fell into the Louis ville road and bought two horses. Calvin and Jones were mounted when taken, and Howell on foot; Calvin thinks Ho well may have about 150 dollars in cash with him, principally in five dol lar bills of the State Bank of Georgia.’’ Synodical Fast. —The Synod ofS. Car fl’una and Georgia, at their stated sessions in November last set apart the Ist Satur day in February, b>'ion; the 2d <la_v of the month, as a day of Fasting, Humiliation and Prayer, throughout the boutids of said Synod.— Columbia Tel. Washington, Jan. IG. The Board of Commissioners fur deci ding on'claiins arising under (lie Spanish Treaty,is now in full session, at their rooms jin this city, and has attracted hither some of the most eminent lawyers in t lie IT S. turning whom are Mr. Hunter, of Rhode Island, Mr. Webster of Boston, Mr, Hofi'- man of New-York, aiyl Mr. Winder, of Uiltimore, From the Vt*w tlmnswiek ( _V. Anew (jig belonging to demy McColm, Estj. of Somerset, w as nx hibited in this city a few days since, to ■fiiicli was attached a inichine of his own invention, which strikes at the end of every tmle, and at the same time shews the dis tance and is constructed on such precise, ttulliematical priucip ies that it may be set &” ato tell the distance of nine thousand wiles; and may be taken oft’or added to ti ny wheel carriage without the least incon 'snience. Great Carelessness. —Yosterd-.v (says the New-Ynrk Daily A*!v. of the 19th insl) \ * respectable citizen, while standing on tin* j lottery, received a duck shot in his eye-i brow, over his right eye, fired from a gun i hy.a man in a boat shouting at Ducks, oft’ lie Battery. Tlie shot lodged in the cor ner of the ey?, but has been cut out by one and our most skilful physicians; and the ‘•nufid is now doing well. Had the shot ‘buck half an inch iwer, he must have lost (is eye,and possibly his life. Several sliot. d<ck on the Battery, fired afterwards f °'P Uie same boat, buc without doing any n .l Ur y. A complaint was lodged at file olicii Office, and the two persons in the! wit were bound over. Bat a few days since, a ball, fired by n 'oe person in a boat oft’ the Battery, buck the within a fe*v inehes * which a gentleman and a little boy were to ruling. Persons who are so regardless ‘'the laws of our city as to endanger the 15 rs of our citizens, should be severely ii'i'ul.ed. Bov. Clinton, by Proclamation, has li ?c,el an election to be held in the county * Albany, on the 12th of February next, to a ?ply the vacancy in Congress, occasion 'i hv the resignation of, Gen. V&a Rcnsse aer. Tba following extract from the Nation al intelligencer, while it bears a scowling front towards Russia, will serve to give some idea of the vastness of our rising re public. A bill was reported in the House of Re presentatives yesterday, the title of which is “a bill to authorise the occupation of the Columbia river.” Yes, reader, you may believe it. for it is true, that a bill is before Congress, and tor aught we know ought to pass, for establishing a colony now, to be hereafter a Territory, at the mouth of the Columbia river, about forty degrees of lon gitude west of Washington, and by water distant, how far we know not, but at the least ten thousand miles. The territory, however, belongs to tiie U. States, and we understand that already our Eastern breth ren resort there for timber which they trans port to the Southern Provinces of America, where that article is scarce. Il will soon become necessary, if it be not now, to esta blish a post there; and it may be well to anticipate those who may else undertake to establish one for us, seeing that their at tention is already turned in that direction. The first section of the bill provides, that the President of the U. States shall be authorized and required to occupy “that portion of the territory of the United States on the waters df the Columbia river,” and to extinguish the Indian title to a portion of it; that every actual settler, being the head of a family, shall be entitled to a cer tain quantity of land, ar and every unmarried settler, or mechanic, also, shall be allowed so many acres, alter a probation of a limit ed lime. When, the population of the set tlement amounts to two thousand souls, all that portion of the teriitory of the U. S. north of the 42d degree of latitude, and west of the Rocky Mountains, is to consti tute a territory of the U. States, under the name of the Teuiiitory of Oricojj. The bill then goes on to provide how the govern ment of the said Territory is to be organi zed and administered. Thus we see, that the genius of our coun try, who but lately seemed to rest on the ‘waters of our lakes, has taken her flight to the margin of tiie western world, and claims this continent for her own. What a noble basis for freedom, has been erected by tins generation for posterity to build on! We shall leave t” our descendants, a continent unshackeleu by monarchist chains—with a constitution of government free as thep.ir which we breathe—a nation free to follow, and to improve our example—a glory to maintain and augment, both by sea and land; if the insulted majesty of die coun ; try demands war—splendid Universities lin every part of the continent for the asv jlums of the muses—charitable institutions beyond number—magnificent temples de voted to the service of the Deity. These are the monuments and the trophies, which will !,. liiii.ilo-l by the prevent gciiC i ration to the next, and we need not envy [ that glorv of the kings, which is too often seen marked by the ashes of conflagration. NAVY RKGISTF.It. * We yesterday received from a torres i pondent in Washington, the “ JS'aval Megis j ter of 1822.” It: appears by it, that the j public are rid of the expensive armaments jon the lakes, and that the Navy now con i sists of the following efficient vessels of war: Line of Battle Shins. — Independence 7-1, Washington 74. Franklin 74, Colum bus 74, Ohio 74, North-Carolnia 74, and Delaware 74. j Frigates of First Class. —Constitution j 44, United-States 44, Guerrierc 44, and Ja- Ia 44. j Frigates of Second Class. —Congress 36, ‘Constellation 36, Macedonian36,and Ful ,too steam frigate 30. The following is a recapitulation of the officers, Stc. —Captains 31, M isters Com mandants 31, Lieutenants 196, Surgeons 46, Surgeon’s Mates 44, Pursers 42, Chap lains 10, Midshipmen 336, Sailing Mas ters 58, Boatswains 1 6. Gunners 17, Car penters 13, Sail Makers 10, and Masters Mates 1. An action of tresspass, of rather a curi ous nature, was lately tried in Fair field county. Conn. Two men were accused nfj breaking into, and carrying oft’the goods] of tile plaintiff, and it was proved that one, of the defendants entered the house by the! chimney, and then broke open the windows] and doors. The defendants justified un-i der a. writ of attachment, and contended j that the descending into the house by thei chimney was lawful forthe service of civil process'; and if not, being once in the house, though by an unlawful entrance, yet the takio- of the goods was not a trespass, for which damages might be recovered. But it was decided that an entrance by he chimney to serve civil process, was un lawful, and th it all service done in conse quence of such unlawful entry, was void. A practical farmer says, that by repeat ed trials lie has found that one ounce of saltpetre dissolved in a pint of water, and to be put on the seed when liming, is a cer tain preventive qf the smut in wheat. A writer in the Leesburg, Va. “Genius of Liberty,” makes a calculation by which it appears, that the -sessions of Congress cost the people between six and seven dollars every minute which that body sits on business. )Jfe> Port of Savannah. \jf|) ARRIVED.
