the nfentibn of that government to expunge
the ystem, but only to limit, and define it.
Solarsh, and unjust, and inhumane, was

the Bob!or of all his property, it consigned
his Sody over to the creditor’s mercy.—

lost in the war.—He was accordingiy given

winter in her family, experiencing die cos

following summer, as he was at work in

The prisoner agreed to the proposal, bu*
not without some apprehensions that mis

Indian found him at his work again, and
very gravely reproved him for not per

provided with t-wo muskets, ammunition
for them, and two knapsacks. The Indian
ordered him to take one of each, and fol

to the south. The man followed, without
‘he least knowledge of what he was to do,

that if the Indian intended him harm, he
-vould have dispatched him at the begjn-
I ning, and that at the worst he was as safe
j where he was, as he could be in any other
place. Within a short time, therefore, his
fears subsided, although the Indian obser
ved a profound and mysterious silence con
cerning the object of the expedition. Ini
the day time they shot such game as came
jin their wav; and at night kindled n lire by
which they slept. After a tedious journey
(if many days, they came one morning to
to the top of an eminence presenting a
prospect of a cultivated country, in which
was a number of houses. The Indian ask
ed Ids companion whether he k> ew (lie
grounds. He replied eagerly that it was
Litchfield. His guide then, after rpjnmd
| ing him that, he had so many years before
[relieved the wants of a famishing Ipdian,
jar an inn in that town, subjoined “lath
j that Indian; now I pay you; go home.”—
| Having said this, he bade him adieu; and
the man joyfully returned to his own hocse.
Our harbour, (says the B thnPatriot of
the 18th) the navigation of which had been
unobstructed until Wednesday last, was
closed with ice, quite down to the torts
on on the following night. It remained
close yesterday; and while the weather co
-as cold as it has been for two days
past, it is not likely that ary attempt will
he made to remove the obstruction by ma
nual labour.
