FOB THE MUSEUM.
ELEGY— In Savannah Grave yard, ,
t *
Luna is gleaming in cerulean skies,
And swift inspiring sadly—pleasing strains,
Nature is still and sleep hath closed the eyes
Os all around—l wander o’er the plains.
llow silence reigns, and monuments do rear
Their cold, white marble o’er the buried dust;
Once the gay body deck’d with beauty, ere
Death inflexible pronounc’d the awful— Mut.
Here rests the merchant —active once and gay,
Low lies the virgin—parents’ highest pride;
The warrior slumbers —who in battle’s fray
Sought death in glory’s arms, and —was denied.
Wrapped in her shroud, that beauty’sface is pale
Which once with health, or artificial glow
Did charm with love, and every where inhale
A thousand flatt’ries from the bowing beau.
There the poor relics of the poorer sleep,
Tost, when alive, on life’s broad wat’ry way;
What rolling eye will linger there and weep
A passing tribute o’er the wretched’s clay ?
On the cold lap of earth the bones recline
Os him, whom ever high ambition led;
Whose joyous brow, he thought, the bay would
twine,
In wreaths immortal round his lofty head.
Low in the earth the skeptick’s ceas'd to vent
The airy visions of his doubting brain;
.The musing wanderer o’er bis tomb-stone bent,
Acad the dread epitaph deep cliissel’d plain:
“Here rests the mortal wiser than his God,
Ilis soul, as body, part of earth’s vile heap;
The noblest thoughts do issue from the sod;
Sleep on forever, death’s eternal sleep.”
Vain mortal! when the high archangel bright,
Shall sound the last and rending awful blast,
Its rousing peal will show appalled sight
A God in terror, mindful of the past.
. \
The brain once filled with love’s celestial fire,
On which deep science poised with equal state,
In which glowed wit, or anger's vengeful ire,
Rests passive all, without one love or hate.
Borne from their home by a strong pale disease,
Like the wave dashing on the frowning steep,
Cofroding deep, yet bringing hope to please
A heart regardless of the poison deep.
In many a grave I see their ashes lie,
No marble decks their long-forgotten cell,
Friends are away, beneath another sky,
Anjltho’ they think, know not where their
relics dwell;
’Neath yon deep copse is heav’d an earthy mound
°V which no stone 1~
say, “There lies the sorrowed child of
wo.”
Mistaken judgment ’ time may roll his years,
And send successive generations down,
But his mean grave will steep the mournful tears
Os rich and great, of blackmoor and the clown.
What tlio’ no tomb enshrouds his fallen frame,
Or record pompous glitter on his urn,
His tomb's the heart of all who’ve heard his name,
Each tongue’s the cloge titles cannot earn.
Angels immortal o’er his grave will strew
Those flowers bright,which never wane or
fade;
But flourish ever and retain their hue
To mark the spot where holy Kollock’s laid.
O rest, ye dead, till that effulgent morn,
When ye shall rise your triumph high to telli
Then may your spirits to their God return,
And Ibe number’d when I hear the farewell.
