STAJfZ.IS.’
I’ve often heard religion called a cloak,
And often seen it worn as such ; besides,
I’ve known some people, young—aye, aged folk,
O’er whom the iickh: maid of shapes presides,
To trim it like a bar.net or a frock,
Just as the fashion of the day decides:
“For illustration, if you’ll spare the time,
Head what's below, ’ns true tho’ writ in rhyme.
*< 3;r, have you prayer-books ?” said a spruce
young belle,
Veiled in a soft Cytherean cloud of lace,
” Sir, have you prayer-books —prayer-books, sir,
to sell ?
The dealer, with bis usual pleasant face,
Averred he had, desired that she would tell
What size she liked, and in what sort of dress.
He’d prayer-books of all sizes, bibles too,
Tn various bindings—black, and red, and blue.
Thus saying, on the counte* he displayed
llis colored, stamped and’richly gilded wares ;
W ith snow -while hand and face all disarrayed,
The prudent belle examines and compares ;
And first, the frontispiece, her eye delayed,
Where knelt a little cherub saying prayers :
W ho's this, without a bow or torch ? the stupid!
Mary, is this a Hymen or a Cupid ?”
” sir, have you others of a smaller size 1
These are to clumsy for u female hand;
Oh, that’s a pretty one ! pray what’s the price ?
The plates are sweetly executed, and
The gilding, too, is put on very nice'-
Now really, which to take! i’in at a stand;
The black is neat—l dont admire the blue—
i’ll take the reil—here, Mary, would’nt you ?”
saw’ this lady at the Church soon after,
Heard her responding with her sweet-ton’d
voice;
I’ll’ august place forbids all thought of laughter,
And so l thought (reflection makes no noise)
How prettily that ornament must waft her
Sweet soul to Heaven—“ above all earthly
toys,”
And bow, too, while she conned the Psalter over,
sHrt heavenly mind was dwelling on—the cover-

FROM TUX PKRCT ANECDOTES.
INSTINCT OF ANTS.
Dr. Franklin, upon discovering’ a; number of
ants'rwafitiig themselves with some treacle in
one of liis cupboards, put them to the route, and
then suspended the pot of treacle from the ceil
ing by a string lie imagined he had put the
whole army to flight, but was surprised to see a
single ant quit the pot, climb up the string, cross
the ceiling, and regain its nest. In less than half
an hour several of its companions sallied forth,
traversed the ceiling, and reached the deposito
ry, which tliey constantly visited until the trea
a'c was consumed. The doctor was therefore of
opinion, that ants were enabled to communicate
their ideas to each other.
In a memoir published in the “Transactions
of the French Academy,’’ an account is given of
a solitary ant, that was taken from its nest, and
thrown upon a heap of corn; it was observed,
after surveying this treasure, to hasten immedi
ately back to its residence,- where it doubtless
< onm unicated to its associates the intelligence ;
for the granary was very soon fdlcd with visitors
and tiic coni carried off.
Smith, in his “ New Voyage to Guinea,?’ re
lates what he calls “a remarkable store of these
gentry,” tho ants. He says, ‘lf the nuts have
pot a language (as many people believe they
have,) vet they certainly have some meth
od cr other whereby they easily make thorn
selves to be understood, as 1 -have often experi
mented in the following manner;—When 1 have
seen two cr more straggling aunts upon the hunt
1 have, killed a cockroach, and thrown it down
before them. As soon as they have found what
it was, they have sent one away for help, while
the others have stayed and watched the dead
body, tall lie returned at the head of a large nos
sc: and if tliey have not been able to carry off
thecockroac , another has been detached and
sent away, who has soon returned with a fresh
supply, sufficient to carry off their prey.”
PitKcr of .Memory. —A singular instance of the
me mory of ants is related by M. Huber, in his
Natural History.” tic says, “ I took in the
month of April, an ant-hill from the woods, for
t,he purpose of populating n w large glazed ap
paratus ; but having more ants than I had occa
sion ’ ! gave liberty to a number in the gar
den f the house where 1 lived. The latter fix
ed heir abode at the fotjt of a chcsnut tree. The
fir became the subject of more private ob
servations. 1 noticed them four months, without
showing them to quit my study; at this time
■v rhirur them nearer to a state of nature, I carri
ed the hive into the garden, and placed it tenor
fifteen paces from the natural ant-hill. The pri
soners, profiting by my negligence of not renew,
ing the water which blockaded the passage, es
caped, and ran about the environs of their abode
The ants established near the che3imt tree,
met and recognised their former companions ;
fell to mutual caresses; with their antemue took
them up by their mandibles, and led them to
their own nests; they came presently in a crowd
to-seek the fugitives,’ under and qbont the artifi
cial ant-hill and even ventured tcreaidi the bell
gtas:, where they effected a complete desertion,
by carrying away successively all the ants they
foiled there, In a few days the liive was depop
ulated These ants had remained four months
-without any communication.”
-J’l.'a in a fioo;'.. —D’Azara informs us, that dur
ing the inundations of the low districts in South-
Ametica, when the ant-hill-, which are usually a
bont three feet in height, are completely under
water, the ants avail themselves of an ingenious
contrivance, to prevent their being carried to
any distance from their habitation. With this
view, and tbr their greater security, they collect
into a compact mass, and keep firm hold of each ,
ot’ ’r. previously attaching one of the extremi
ti. r to some neighboring plant or fixed point of
- sort, leaving the otfier end free, and floating
on .ie surface of the water as long as the inun
dation, vv nidi usually lasts a few days, continues.
