rBOH TgE HATIONAI OAZZTTZ.
He comes not—l have watch’d the moon go
down,
But yet he comes not—once it was not so.
He thinks not how these bitter tears do flow,
Tlie while he hold* his riot in that town.
Yet he will come,'and chide, and I shall weep ;
And lie will wake my infant from its sleep,
To blend its feeble Wailing with my tears.
O ! how | love a motheris watch to keep.
OVer those sleeping eVes, that smile, which
cheerti
My heart, though sunk in sorrow, fix’d and deep.
1 had a husband once, who lov’d me—now
He ever wears a frown upon his brow,
And feeds hjs passion on a wanton’s lip,
As bees, from laurel flow’rs a poisin sip ;
But yet, I cannot hate—O ! there were hours,
When I could hang forever on his eye,
And Time, who stole with silent swiAness by,
* Strewed, as he hurried on his path with flowers.
1 lov’d him then—he lov’d me too—my heart
Still finds its fondness kindle, if he smile ;
The memory of our loves Will ne’er depart;
And though he often sting me with a dart,
Vertom’d and barb’d, and waste upon the vile,
Caresses which his babe and mine should share;
Though he should spurn me, 1 will calmly hear
His madness—and should sickness come, and lay
Its paralyzing hand upon him, then
1 would, with kindness, all my wrongs repay,
Until the penitent should weep, and say,
How injured, and how faithful I had been.

LACON.
A'workJins lately made its appearance in Eng
land with great reputation, having passed thro’
eight edition, and is republished in this country,
entitled “Lacon, or many things in a few words,
addressed to those who think.” The Author in
his preface says—“l have addressed ibis volume
to those -who think, and some may accuse me of an
ostentatious independence in presuming to in
scribe a book to so small a minority; but a volume
addressed to those who think is in fact addressed
to all the world; /or although the proportion of
those who ilo think, be extremely small,vet every
individual flatters himself he is one of the num
ber.” The author acknowledges'he writes be
cause he has nothing to do, but avers he will
cease the moment he has nothing to sav. The
volume affords a rich source for extracts —wc
shall occasionally avail ourselves of tne benefit.
Men spend their lives in anticipation, in deter
mining to be vastly happy at some future period
or other, -when they ha've time. Hut the present
time has one advantage ov„r any other—it is our
own.. Past opportunities a,e gone, future are
not come. Wc may lay in a stock of pleasure,
as we would lay in a stock of wine ; but if we
defer tasting of ihem too long, we shall find that
they both are soared by age. Let our happi
ness, therefore, be a modest mansion, which we
can inhabit while we have our health and vigor
to enjoy it; not a fabric so vast and expensive,
that it has cost us the best part of’ our lives to
build, and which we can expect to occupy only
when we have less occasion for an habitation
than a tomb. It has been well observed that we
should treat futurity as an aged friend, fi.cri
whom we expect a rich legacy. Let us do luih
ing to forfeit his esteem, and treat liim with
respect not with scurility. But let us not be too
prodigal when we are young, nor too pa.simom
. ous when we are old,’ otherwise we shall fall into
the common error of those who, when they had
the power to enjoy, had not the prudence to ac
quire ; and when they had prudence to acquire,
lead no longer the power to enjoy,
If hypocrites go to hell by the road to heaven.
we may carry on the metaphor, and add, that as
all the virtues demand their respective tolls, the
hypocrite h s a by-way to avoid them, and get
into the main road again. Ami all would be well
ifhe could escape the hist turnpike in tjje jour
ney of life, where all must pay, where there is no
by path, and where the toll is death.
There are only two things on which the false
professors of ail religion have agreed—to perse
cute all other sects, and to plunder their own.
ritou the pf.bct anecdotes.
DRACO.
The severity of the laws of Draco is proverbial;
he punished almost all sorts of faults with dea'.h ;
and was hence said by Denudes “ to have writ
ten his laws, not with ink, but with blood.” To
steal an apple was with him a crime of as deep a
die, as to commit sacrilege ; even “ confirmed j
idleness” was punished with death. On Draco,
himself being once asked, “Why he punished
such petty crimes with death ?” he made this se
vere answer; “ That the smallest of them did
deserve that, and that there was not a greater
punishment he could find out for greater crimes.”
SOLON.
Anacharsis'was wont, to deride die endeavors
of Solon, whose code of law superseded the
bloody one of Draco, to repress the evil passions
of ids fellow citizens with a few words, which,
said he, “ are no better than spiders webs,
which the strong 1 will break through at pleasure.”
“So like a fly the poor offender dies,
Hut like the wasp, the rich escapes and flies.”
. ‘ ‘ ‘ HEXHAM.
‘T he reply ofSolon was worthy ofthe law-giv
.er of a refined people. “ Men,” said he, “will
be suie to stand to those covenants, which will
bring evident disadvantage to the infringers of
them, i have so framed and tempered the laws
of Vthens, that it shall manifestly appear to all,
that it is more for their interest strictly to ob
serve, than in any thing to violate and infringe
them.”
TIES OP KINDRED.
‘"-riiocion, the Athenian general, never suffered
domestic or private views to interfere with the
public interest. He constantly refused to solicit
anv favor even for those most nearly allied to i
him. His son-in-law, (“ierides, being summon-;
ed before die republic on a suspicion of having’
embezzled the public rr.onev, Phocion addressed j
him in these admirable terms: “ I have made
voumy son-in -law, but only for what is just and:
honorable.”
