THE MUKEiiM.
* From the Russian Anthology.
THE HOUSE-BUILDER.
AY hat e’er thou purposest to <lo,
“With an unwearied zeal pursue;
To day is thine—improve to-day,
Nor trust to-morrow’s distant ray.
A certain man a house would build,
The place is with materials filled^
Aaul every thing is ready there—
Is it a difficult affair ?
Yes! till you fix the comer stone ;
It wont erect itself alone.
Day rolls on day, and year on year,
And nothing yet is done—
There's always something to delay
The business to another day.
’ Aml thus in solemn silence stood,
The piles of stone and piles of wood ;
Till Death, who in his vast affairs,
Ne’er puts tilings off—as men in theirs ; -
And thus, if I the truth niu3t ltd,
Does hi* work finally, and -well,
Wink’d at our Hero as lie past:
“ Your house is finished, sir, at last;
“ A -narrower house —a house of clay ;
Y our palace for another day /”
MILTON.
The Duke of York, it is said, one day told the
king bis brother (Charles II ) that he had heard
so much of old Milton, he had a great desire to
see him. Charles told tile duke, that he had no
objection to his satisfying his curiosity , and ac
cordingly shortly after, James having ur. ed
himself where Milton lived, went privately - i s
house. Being introduced to him,and St .on be
ing informed of the rank of iiis guest, they con
versed together for some time; blit, n. the course
of their conversation, the duke asked .Milton
whether lie did not think ihc loss of his sght
was a judgment upon him for wfia* lie ha . writ
ten against the late king his father ? Mu: re
ply was to this effect: “If your hignnes :iks
that the calamities which befal us here. n ii
catians of the wrath of heaven, in wiu> ier
are wc to account for the fate of too k:. < .r
fuller ? The displeasure, of heaven i. \
this supposition, have been much great* ( ,
him, tlian againsi me ; for 1 have only ~>
eyes, but he lost his head.” The duke was
oeedingly nettled at this answer, and went aw a
spoil after vpry angry. When lie came back to
the court, the first thing lie said to the king wz*
M Brother, you are greatly to blame that you
don’t have that old rogue Milton hanged.” “Why
what’s the matter, James ?” s .id the king : you
seem in a heat! What, have you see. d.lton ?*’
Yes,” answered the duke, “I have seen him.
“Well,” said the king, “in what condition did
you find him?” “Condition!” replied tile duke
“why he’s old and very poor.” “Old and poor;”
said the king; “well, and he is blind, is he not?”
“YCs, said’ tlic duke “blind as a beetle.” “Why
then you are a fool, James,” replied the king,
“to want to have him hanged as a punishment; to
hang him will he doing him a service ; it will b e
taking him out ot'his miseries. No, if he is old,
poor and blind, he is miserable enough in all
conscience; let him live.”
The late lord R with many good qualities
and even learning ami parts, had a strong desire
of being thought skilful in physic, and was very
expert in bleeding’- Lord Chesterfield, who
knew his foible, and on a particular occasion
wished to have his vote, came to him one morn
ing. and, after having conversed upon indifferent
matters, complained of the head ach, and desir
ed his Lordship to feel his pulse. It was found
to beat high, and a hint of loosing blood was giv
en. “ I have no objection; and, as I hear your
Lordship has a masterly hand, will you favor me
with trying yotir lancet upon me ? Apropos,”
said Lord Chesterfield, af.er the operation, “do
you g-o to the house to-day ?” Lord R——an
swered “ l did hot intend to go, not being suf
ficiently informed of the question which is to he
debated; but you who have considered it. which
side will you be ot ?” The carl, having gained
his confidence, easily directed his judgment; he
Carried him to jtiie house and go 1 - him to vote as
he pleased. He used afterwards to say, that
none of his friends had done as much as lie, hav
ing literally hied for the good of his country.
Dr. John Wilkins, a man of uncommon parts
Sod abilities in the reign of Charles 11. has been
laughed at together with his chimeras, but even
these shew thear elves to he the chimeras of a
man of genius. Such was his attempt to shew
the possibility of a voyage to the moon; in a con
versation with the dutchess of Newcastle, her
grace asked hint’ “Doctor, where am 1 to find a
place for baiting at, in the way up to tha plan
et?” “Madam,” said lie, “ofall people in the
world, I never expected that question from you,
who have built *o many castles in the air, that
vou may live every night at one of your own.”
When the late celebrated coun* Zinzcndorf
(founder of a sect of religion ca'led Moravians)
was inployed upon the mission in North Amer
ica. addressing himself to an assembly of the
chiefs of one of the Indian nations,on the subject
of Christianity, they ingenuously confessed th'em
sef, es to he rude and unskilful, and utterly un
qualified to make any judgment in the affair; tel
ling him, that, in nil points of religion, it was a
constant rule with them, to follow the example
of their next neighbors, who were more know
ing; they therefore referred hini to them. The
count accordingly went to those people, who
w ere distingiised by the character of the Know
jng-ones, not without hopes of meeting with all
the success he desired. In those flattering views
he presently called the chiefs of the nation to
gether, who met him with all the wished-for
readiness ; whereupon asking them, if ever they
had heard any thing of Jesus Christ • “Yes sure
ly,” replied diey, “we knew Jesus Christ very
well: Jesus Christ was a Frenchman, that was
murdered by those rogues the English.”
